UNDER THE BANNER WHATS GOING ON IN AND AROUND BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS NEWS CENTRAL: In case you missed it, Tuskegee annouced last week that Rick Comegy who led Central State to the NAIA national football championship this year, has accepted the head coaching vacancy there. Comegy posted an 18-3 record in two years at Central State, including a 10-1 mark this season. His squad this year posted a 37-7 win over Northeast Oklahoma State for the NAIA national crown. The 1994 team lost in the first round of the playoffs. Comegy replaces Haney Catchings who resigned in November after posting a 2-9 record. Comegy had become the head man at Central State two years ago when Billy Joe left to become head coach at Florida A&M. He had served as Joe's defensive coordinator. Central State President, Dr. Herman D. Smith, held a press conference Monday to announce that the school is replacing Comegy with 46-year old. Jack Bush. Bush served as defensive coordinator for this year's team and previously served as CSU defensive line coach in 1989. Bush is a Lincoln (MO) graduate. Smith also announced that Ken Hudson would be the school's new athletic director with particular responsibility for fundraising. Hudson is a 1961 Central State grad. NOT A CLUE: Looking for a clue as to who will replace Ken Free as the next commissioner of the Mid Eastern Athletic Confemce? Check out these develop ments. Former CBS Sports reporter Irv Cross, who applied for the job, was named athletic director at Idaho State University March 2. II national tournament championship after crowning their conference tournament champi ons over the weekend. Meanwhile, South Carolina State and coach Cy Alexander return to the NCAA Div. I championship tournament for the first time since 1989 after downing Coppin State Saturday in the Mid Eastern Athletic Confemce men's fi nal. Howard and coach Sanya Tyler make their first appearance since 1982 after winning the women's MEAC title. CIAA Norfolk State's sweep of both men's and women's titles at the 51st CIAA tournament in Winston-Salem, NCis bittersweet. The men broke Va. Union's four-year stranglehold on the tournament crown while the women grabbed their fifth title in six years. But neither will advance to Div. II postseason play because of the school's decision to jump to NCAA Div. I status in the 1997-98 season. Norfolk State plans to return to the CIAA tournament next year. The Norfolk State men needed a sterling 23- point, 12-rebound performance from All-CIAA forward Derrick Bryant to get a 72-70 overtime victory over Va. Union. The win marked Norfolk coach Mike Bernard's first CIAA tournament championship. "It was a long time coming," said Bernard, who won a national championship in 1989 during his six-year stay at North Carolina Central. This is his fifth year at NSU. "This was a fitting occasion to get it," he said. The Spartan women ran away from Shaw behind 28 points from tourney MVP Latina Bullock. Virginia Union (25-2), who won the Northern Division regular season title and was ranked at or near the top of the Div. II poll all year and North Division regular season winner North Carolina Central (20-6) were selected to play in the South Atlantic Men's Region in Richmond, Va this week. Shaw (24-4) and Bowie State (20- 9) will play in the women's South Atlantic Regional in Wingate, NC. MEAC South Carolina State's win over Coppin State was certainly no surprise in the men's half of the MEAC championship in Tallahassee, Florida but the win by Howard in the women's Joe Daniels Photo AS FAR AS THEY CAN GO: Norfolk State coach Mike Bernard counsels his troops at CIAA tourney. tourney was somewhat of a surprise. North Carolina A&T, usually known for pulling off big upsets in the men's bracket, did so this time in women's play. Coach Tim Abney's Lady Aggies handed conference leader Florida A&M a surpirse 57-56 whipping on the Rattlerettes home floor in Friday's semifinals. Their good fortune ran out however against a powerful Howard squad who downed the Lady Aggies 76-47 to take the crown and the automatic NCAA Div. I tournament bid that goes with it. S. C. State's men used balanced scoring and a stifling defense to send Coppin State to their third consecutive tournament finals defeat, 69- 56. Coppin was held to just 23 percent shooting from the field. Both Howard and S. C. State will await men's and women's Div. I pairings to be announced March 10. SIAC Alabama A&M notched their third consecutive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's tournament championship and regional berth , running by Morehouse 92-70. Conference Player of the Year, Deartrus Goodman of Alabama A&M added tournament MVP to his trophy haul. Clark Atlanta loss to Alabama A&M in the semis but also received a bid to regional play. ON the women's side, Albany State avenged two losses during the regular season by pulling out a 72-20 thriller over Fort Valley for the championship. Albany State's all-conference point guard Chaquita Wright, held to four points in the two regular season losses to Fort Valley, had 20 in the finals and was named tournament MVP. Fort Valley went into the game ranked #22 nationally and first in the South Region. They fell to third and will join Albany State in first round action March 7 in Cleveland, Mississippi (Delta State). Culbreath does it again Central State's wornen, led by sprinter Catherine Scott-Pomales, won the NAIA Indoor Track and Field championship this weekend in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was the sixth women's national title for Central State coach Josh Culbreath, who had won one indoor and four outdoor titles previously. Culbreath has won three men's national championships. Pomales won the 55 meter hurdles and the 55 meter dash, setting a meet record of 6.85 seconds in the 55 meters where she led a 1-2-3 Central State finish. Ronalee Davis was the other individual winner for the Marauders taking the triple jump with a leap of 40' 1.55". The team totalled 96 points to outdistance Wayland Baptist (86) and Azusa Pacific (76). cULBREATH:Wins Southern (NO) ninth NAIA track finished fourth with championship. 56 points and » Arkansas-Pine Bluff tied for ninth. The Central Stale men finished in third place overall behind champion Azusa Pacific (91) and Oklahoma Baptist (83). The Marauders scored 54 points but did not have an individual champion.
