3B ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, October 3, 1996 mm LISA COLLINS will release sometime next Behind The Scenes year. They’re Back! The renowned r&b singing, song writing and husband and wife team of Ashford & Simpson, who enjoyed success oh the charts two decades ago Soul Sister: Seems talk show queen Oprah Winfrey - who has been busy behind the scenes securing film properties to tie into already secured pro duction deals with those like Disney - is getting serious about her own desire to get back into film. She’s currently set to star in and produce a comedy titled “Soul Sister,” which is presently being devel oped through her own produc tion company, Harpo Productions. The ■ movie, dubbed “a female Sunshine boys” is centered around two women - once members of a band that suffered a bitter split - who decided to reunite and go back out on the road. The movie, which will be released through Disney, marks her first feature film since the release of “Native Son” in 1986. In other film news: Oscar nominated actor Laurence Fishburne has signed on to join the cast of Francis Ford Fishburne Coppola’s upcoming film, “The Rainmaker.” It marks the first time he and Coppola have worked together since being directed by Coppola in the 1979 Classic Vietnam war film, “Apocalypse Now.” “The Rainmaker” - the film adapta tion of John Grisham’s novel - centers on the story of a young lawyer who takes on the case of a poor family whose son has died as a result of being denied medical care by an insurance company. Fishburne will play the judge. New Faces: You can expect both to hear and see more of Richard T. Jones, an actor who is now seeing a great deal of action in Hollywood. After smaller roles in films like the Tina Turner biopic, “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” Jones landed a plum role in “Kiss The Girls,” the forth coming thriller that stars Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd. And now, Jones has been tapped as one of the male leads in the forthcoming Paramount sci-fi thriller “Event Horizon,” which tells the story of a missing space ship that mysteriously reap pears years later. Jones plays a crew member aboard a mis sion to salvage the spacecraft that is confronted with an unexplainable life form. Production gets underway next month for the film which marks the couple’s first record ing since the 1989 Capitol album Love or Physical. Their latest effort is a collabo ration with famed poeVauthor Maya Angelou, who was awarded a spoken word Grammy winner for her recording of “On The Pulse of Morning,” the poem she recit ed at the Inauguration cere monies for President Bill Clinton. Angelo worked so well with the duo that she is includ ed on seven of the eleven recorded tracks.... Meanwhile, Earth, Wind & Fire has signed a new four- album deal with Pyramid Records. A “Greatest Hits Live” collection is set for release on Oct. 29. It features 18 of the band’s classics, recorded while the group toured in 1995. The Resurfacing of Arthel Neville: A pilot, shot last month, teams former “Extra” host Arthel Neville with Los Angeles sports anchor Fred Roggin for an upcoming talk show being billed as a younger, more bip version of “Live With Regis & Kathie Lee.” The pilot is part of an hour-long show that is presently being scheduled for a fall 1997 release. Depending on market place need, the show could debut earlier than planned. Ironically, word is that NBC could have had a hand in Neville’s being dropped as co host of “Extra” when the net work opted to change to more of a pop culture format. By the way: With the suc cess of his Los Angeles movie theater - which remains one of top grossing theater venues in the coun try, Magic Johnson is now build ing an $80 million retail and office com plex in Jamaica, Queens, which will include an 11-screen Magic Johnson Theaters multiplex. . .And Jones Quincy Jones and his partner are pitching syndicator on the idea of an updated version of the game show “Name That 'Tune,” which could be paired with a remake of the game show “Treasure Hunt.” ^ARVEY’S GARAGg « ■ ■■ H W W 1 BQbQSd BshBiB: Every Thursday Li\ c Jazz Iivcry Friday & Sat.
