McKelvey (704)399-2717 Biracial couple fiiKis no solice in church THE ASSOCIATED PRESS THOMASVILLE, Ga. - “Jaime Wireman and Jeffrey Bubba” Johnson made headlinesseven months ago when Baptist deacons asked her to remove their baby's body from a church cemetery because she is white and he is black. After leaving Georgia and spending time in Florida, where they ran into more mis fortune, the couple are back in Thomasville. But their luck hasn't changed much. “We have no place to stay. We’ve slept on porch chairs and in the bathroom at the farmer's market before. We never know from day to day,” said Ms. Wireman, adding that they also have stayed with fiiends. Baby Whitney, who was bom in Meu-ch without a skull, died a day later and was buried at Barnett's Creek Baptist Church cemetery. When the church's seven deacons learned that the father was black, they voted unanimously to remove the infant's body, citing a church policy dating from the 1800s that barred minorities from the cemetery. After a public outcry, the deacons changed their minds and church leaders apolo gized. But later the church declined to marry the couple o r let them join it. Johnson and Ms. Wireman left shortly after “just to get away from everything. It was just driving us both crazy,” she said. In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Ms. Wireman made the news again when she was arrest ed on theft charges. She was with Johnson's cousin when the relative was caught for shoplifting, she said. Ms. Wireman entered a no contest plea to petty theft and is serving a year on probation. Stressing her iimocence, she said it would have taken a year in Florida to fight the charge. Ms. Wireman, 19, said she has visited the state Labor Department offices since returning to Thomasville two weeks ago but has been unable to find a job. Johnson, 26, has been back since early September. He began a temporary job in near by Ochlocknee stacking and boxing bags of cat litter for $5. 50 an hour from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. He would like to get a construction job. The pair applied for food stamps two weeks ago. Ms. Wireman said they snack on potato chips or eat at cheap restaurants when they can afford it. The couple said their fami lies stood by them through the baby's death and controver sy over her burial. But that's changed, they said. Both said relatives do not approve of their biracial rela tionship, which they blame for much of their plight. In Fort Lauderdale, Johnson said, a pending job seemed to disappear when the prospec tive employer learned about the baby controversy. “Oh, ain't you the one on TV ?” Johnson said he was asked. And suddenly there was no job. Before the baby's birth and death, Ms. Wireman said, the y had jobs and a two-bed- room mobile home.
