State 11 15- 8 Southern earns Heritage Bowl berth vs. Howard Maybe the Heritage Bowl will determine the black college national champion after all. Southern University, who already holds wins over the two black college Div. I-AA playoff teams, defeated Grambling 17- 12 in Saturday's BayoM Classic to set up a meeting with Howard University (6-1,9-2) in the Dec. 31 HeritageBowl VI in Atlanta's Georgia Dome. Howard, under head coach Steve Wilson moved into the top spot of the BCSP football rankings after losses this week by#l Jackson State (6-1,10-2) and #3 Florida A&M (7-0,9-3) in the NCAA Div. I-AA play offs. Howard quarterback Ted White finished the season as the NCAA Div. I-AA top-rated passer and perhaps the hottest player in black college football. White, named this week as the Mid Eastern Athletic Confer ence Offensive Player of the Year, has thrown for 36 touch downs while completing sixty percent of his throws. He has thrown TD passes to 12 differ ent receivers on the year. Pete Richardson's Jaguars (5-2,7-4) finished tied for sec ond with Mississippi 'Valley State (5-2, 7-4) and Texas Southern (5-2,7-4) in the final Southwestern Athletic Con ference (SWAC) race but earned the Heritage Bowl berth by virtue of largest winning point differntial in head-to-head meetings with those schools. Southern handed Jackson State their only SWAC defeat, 27-16 on Oct. 19, and knocked Florida A&M from atop the BCSP rankings with a 21-17 win on Nov. 9. The Jags, who lost 1995 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, RB Melvin Williams to academics before the start of the season, had losses to Alabama State, Northwest ern Louisiana, Nicholls State and Texas Southern. Howard, the MEAC run ner-up, lost to Marshall, the top-ranked team in I-AA foot ball 55-27 to open the season, and fell an extra point short of Florida A&M, 21-20, in the sea.son's fourth week. A white lie It was widely reported that this past week's Bayou Classic matchup of Grambling and Southern would be the first time that two white quarterbacks would start in a game pitting two historically black institutions. Not so says South ern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Commis sioner Wallace Jackson. Jackson called the BCSP just as the Bayou Classic kicked off to say that the Oct. 5.1996 SIAC game between Tuskegee and Kentucky State holds that distinction. And Jackson says he's got the video and play-by-piay to prove it. In that game, Tuskegee started junior Grant Mitchell at quarterback while Kentucky State countered with junior Roman Lori at the helm. Both starting signal callers were, and still are, white. Grambling freshman QB Michael Komblau faced Southern sophomore QB Marcus Jacoby in the nationally televised Bayou Classic. I-AA playoffs continued over the weekend as both Jackosn State and Florida A&M bit the dust in opening round action. Blackcollege teams have not won a Div. I-AA playoff game since 1986 and are 6-27 since Florida won the inaugual title in 1978. Troy State 29 Florida A&M 25 The Rattlers put up a good fight against the fourth-ranked Trojans of Troy State. FAMU trailed 13-10 at the half but took a 25-19 lead into the fourth quarter on the strength of two third quarter Oteman Sampson touchdown passes. The Trojans however got a 45-yard fourth quarter field goal and took the lead for good on a 15-yard TD run with over six minutes to play. FAMU could not score on their ensuing possession. Sampson completed 20 Of 38 passes for 261 yards. The Rattlers surrendered 362 yards rushing to Troy State.
