5B ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, January 2, 1997 Sounds: Day To Day debuts Continued from 4B ing. So is their sound. The five •voices create a tight harmony that isn’t reminiscent of any one else. There’s a touch of pop and acoustic, but the base is clearly r&b. The group is best at ballads that show off their voices, such as “Smile,” “Take Your 'lime,” and “Who Do You Love.” The mid-tempo “U Represent” has a touch of Confunkshun in the vocals. Nice touch. Good CD. ☆☆☆☆☆ ☆☆☆☆ SxcetUHt; ☆☆☆ ^uU; ☆☆ yeU>i; ☆ 70^7; ^ tKe44: Music fared very well last year Continued from page 4B hooked. There still isn’t a male singer who’s mastered a phrase or sings with as much passion. The title song is one of my favorites, as is “I Can Make It Better,” “Crazy Love” £md “Goin’ Out of My Head.” Tonie, Toni, Tony, House of remake of the Four Tops “I Beheve In You And Me” sound spiritual. You go, girl! Johnny Gill, Lets Get The Mood Right - Gill continues to hone his skills as a singer, not that he needs much prac tice. This guy has Herculean pipes, but he’s uses them to their fullest potential on this CD. The title song is the best single I heard this year - ‘straight budda’ as the slang goes. Joshua Redman, In The Groove - No, Redman hasn’t gone pop-jazz. He’s just become more accessible. He’s still traditional, but he sneaks a few contemporary licks in. This is a very deep brother. BLACKStreet, Another Level - Riley has his new group humming. Mark Middleton’s ethereal falsetto is a welcomed addition to the group. Music - One listen to this and you know what artists influ enced the Tonyies: A1 Green, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, even Michael Jackson. This is a ‘90s old-school record that works. I mean really works. “Still A Man” is a ballad that would work in any decade. Maxwell, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite - Goodness, this man can sing. His voice is as good as any instrument. His style is a throw back to decades ago and his song selec tion is impeccable. “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)” and “Sumptin’ Sumptin’” are too good to be missed. Ann Nesby, I’m Here For You - Fiery, gutsy, powerful. Any of these words describes Nesb/s voice. She fronts The Sounds of Blackness, so her name may be unfamiliar but her voice shouldn’t be. Girlfriend can sing with the best of them and on “Getting The Spirit,” “I’m Still Wearing Your Name” and “I’ll Do Anything for You” she does. If you don’t have this, go get it now. Ron Winans presents Family and Friends IV - Put any Winans on a record and it’s going to be good. Fortunately, most of them made guest appearances on Ron’s spectacular CD, the fourth in a series. It’s my favorite gospel CD of the year. CeCe Winans offers the heart felt “I’ll Go,” partner BeBe nearly brings the house down with “But God.” But it’s Donnie McClurkin’s “Stand” that is awe-inspiring. The Preacher’s Wife - Ya think Houston’s voice isn’t soulful enough? Take a listen. She was raised in the church and it shows on this marvelous soimdtrack. She tears up Kirk Franklin’s “Joy” and puts a hurtin’ on “Hold On, Help Is On The Way.” Even the secular songs like Annie Leonx’s “Step By Step” or her sparkling 5 DAYS ONLY!
