6B ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, January 2, 1997 ‘Ghost’ tells story from a different view Continued from page 4B M5rrlie Evers-Williams, a civil rights leader who served as a consultant on “Ghosts of Mississippi,” is generous toward the film - as far as it goes. “I did argue the point that I would have Uked to have seen Medgar’s life portrayed and what my children and I have been through,” she said. “But I have to respect Rob Reiner’s right as creator of this movie to approach it in the way that he did. “I really feel sincerely that’s he done a fantastic job with this. However, I am passionate about Medgar’s story being told, as well as mine and my children’s,” said Evers- Williams. “That’s a very important part of history.” But certain kinds of iustory clearly are more appealing to Hollywood than others. “The powers that be in this town are not so thrilled about making movies about serious subjects like this for commer cial consumption,” said Reiner. “It’s not easy to do, so you try to find ways you can get into this arena.” A handful of films such as Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and “Get on the Bus” aside, those ways are unlikely to include films primarily from a minori ty perspective or lacking white stars.
