I didn’t care much for
Incognito’s 100 Degrees and
Rising CD or its remix CD.
Beneath The Surface puts
the group back on my A list.
Incognito is concentrating on
its basic sound, a sound that’s
made it the darling of smooth
jazz radio stations. Featured
vocalists Maysa, Imani and
Christopher Ballin are in top
form, especially Ballin’s
“Without You.” This is the kind
of thing you slip into a CD
player, relax and constantly
reach for the jewel case to find
out the name of the songs.

said Medina’s attorney, Neil
Checkman. He said Dunn’s
equity in the house is about
$60,000.
Checkman said Dunn, an
occupational therapist, met
and treated Medina in the
1980s after he had a serious
head injury. He said she earns
$140,000 a year running a
business that adapts utensils
for the handicapped.
Medina’s head injury means
he does not know where or
when he was bom or who his
parents are, Checkman said.
He said Medina apparently
cannot remember anything
before the early 1970s.
That prompted prosecutor
Lewis Liman to call Medina
“rootless” and question
whether he is even an
American citizen.
Checkman told the court that
Medina works for Dunn and
lives in her house. He said
Dunn has been working on a
children’s film that Medina
was trying to promote in
California when he met
Jackson.
The magistrate told Medina
he had to post $50,000 up front
because he has a fraud convic
tion in Kansas from the 1980s.
Medina was on probation from
that conviction when arrested
last week. If he makes bail, he
can go home to Bethesda but
must wear an electronic moni
toring bracelet.
A preliminary hearing is set
for Feb. 4 to determine
whether there is reason to pro
ceed with a criminal case.

Jackson said he recently con
tacted his daughter and that
she didn’t seem interested in
meeting him.
“The mother wanted me to
loan her some money,” he said.

This credo of Carlenia Ivory is why she is this month's feature.
Where ever and when ever there is a community need, particularly with '
children involved, Ivory can he found.
Carlenia obtained her BA Degree in Psychology from Johnson C.
Smith University in 1972. After graduation she joined Eastern Airlines' _
as Manager for Reservation Sales and was there for 17 years. Her community in
volvement surfaced shortly thereafter, when she joined the staff of the Gantt for
Mayor Campaign.
Now employed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as Program Coordinator
for Double Oaks Community Center, she has the opjKrrtunity to devote herself full
time to the advancement of the community.
Carlenia has developed several programs while at Double Oaks. One of her
favorites is the 'Parent Program," where parental involvement grants coats (new
& sli^tly used) to families in need. Another program involves organizations and
businesses that assist with activities for the children 3 weekends per month. On
top of this, Ivory personally brings a child home every weekend to spend time with
her family.
She says blessings come to her and husband, Titus, Sr., because their sons,
Titus II and TerreU, are both doing well in school, and the family shares a very
dose bond.
After all of this, there's even time for membership in the Carrousels, Char
lotte Links, Charlotte Moles, Jack & Jill and African-American Women United.
She is a past member of the Board of Managers for McCrorey YMCA, and cur
rently sits on the Board of N.C. Agriculture Extension.
