Learning Landscape
Youngsters join in groundbreaking for an outdoor “Learning Landscape” at the YWCA
Uptown Child Development Center at 415 E. 4th Street. The “Learning Landscape’’ will
Include a series of interactive gardens that will introduce children to concepts about
plant growth, care of their environment and various climates around the world. It will
include giant sunflowers, a sundial, rain gauge and melon patch.
Lori Shaffer, YWCA vice prestent of child and youth development said «The Learning
Landscape is unlgue because it combines an area for active, gross motor play like run
ning and swinging with more fine motor, manipulative activities Involving science and
art projects In the gardens.”
Bud Rlteel, a parent at the center, designed the gardens and will oversee their creation.
Bitzel is president of The Yard Man landscape design company.
