5C TOP SENIORSH'he Charlotte Post Thursday, May 15, 1997 Johnson is 1997 Senior of the Year Runner Up By Kaia Zawadi THE CHARLOTTE POST C orey Johnson is The Charlotte Post/Coca-Cola Senior of the Year runner up. A senior at Independence High School, he is a well-rounded per son who holds many offices includ ing president of the executive council, president of the Spanish Club, vice chairperson and vice chairperson. “I feel that it was a great achievement for me to receive this top award,” he said. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked 11th in his class. Johnson has been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill, Florida A&M, N.C. State and Gleorgia Tech. “I am stuck between all three schools except Georgia Tech,” saidi Johnson. “I’m going to wait and see how much money will be offered.” Johnson’s decision will all come down to which college will work out the best for him in terms of trav eling expenses and just being away from home. Johnson’s anticipated^ major is engineering. He hasl received numerous scholar ships such as the Pogue Scholarship, Presidential Scholarship, John T. Caldwell Dean Scholarship and the Freshman Incentive Scholarship. Johnson’s counselor, John Cochrane, has watched him blos som throughout his four years at Independence High. “Corey is a spectacular student ^ .-285?, M „ , , , , * ■ i- • * -’5 ’ ias i- m ¥ f ■ and is not like most stu- ’’dents,” Cochrane said. “He mingles with every student of every ethnic background, students from every grade and all of the staff He finds a way to fit in with everyone.” Johnson has never missed a day of school over 13 years. In all of his four years at Independence High, he has received all A’s in every Corey Johnson class. “ I feel that Corey will be very successful in whatever he does. It is very rare that we have people like Corey,” Cochrane said. “Wherever he sits he’ll do well. I’m not the only counselor he works with. He likes to have a relation ship with everyone.” Johnson’s hobbies include bas ketball, public speaking, volun teering and traveling.
