6B ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, May 22, 1997 Sot/f(os, ‘Sprung’ Soundtrack misses mark Continued from SB isn’t. Various Artists Sprung Various producers Qwest/Wamer Bros. ☆ 1/2 Thi.s is the perfect case of a soundtrack having little to do with a movie. Very little of this was even heard in the movie, thankfully. And from the sound of it, few of the artists have a clue as to what “Sprung” is about. Particularly grating is Mr. Dalvin’s “2 Kite’s ’The Kite.” Now I know why he doesn’t sing much in Jodeci. He can’t. There are a couple of songs of merit. Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold do a credible job on “Don’t Ask My Neighbor,” a classic originally done by the Emotions. And Quincy Jones’ “Secret Garden” will sound good no matter how much bad music surrounds it. 'Trust me, there’s a lot of bad music sur rounding it. Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆ Classic; ☆☆☆☆ Excellent; ☆☆☆ Good; ☆☆ Fair; ☆ Why?; No stars given - A mess ‘Tour of Life’ heads for Ovens Auditorium SUBSCRIBE TO Ciie If you have any question or concerns. Sometimes music needs to let you know you’re not your own and that you’re not alone.” Franklin’s music also lets you know he knows a little about funk. His latest outing is with God’s Property called “Stomp.” It’s a good-time gospel scorcher with lyrics like “Oh, yeah/We havin’ church, ain’t going no where.” Die-hard traditionalist may have a problem with it, but kids are eating it up.” Fred Hammond and his pow erful Radical For Christ choir are touring with Franklin. Hammond is becoming one of the most sought after produc ers in the business. He’s worked with Yolanda Adams (who has dropped off the tour), Oletta Adams (no relation to Yolanda), Angelo & Veronica and the secular group Riff. Hammond got his start with Commissioned. He spent near ly a decade with the group - producing, writing and lead singing. He stepped away for a solo career, then formed Radical For Christ. The group’s latest recording. Spirit of David has been on the charts for nearly a year. It chronicles the life of the Biblical hero. “A friend of mine was listen ing to the stuff we were doing for the album and said ‘man, you have the heart and spirit of David,’” Hammond said. “And at that moment I knew that’s what I wanted to call the For Comments or questions, Please call us at 704-376 0496 or 1-888-376- POST album. And the more I thought about it, the more I thought the title was perfect. I’ve faced a lot of giants myself, I was father less, growing up in Detroit pub lic schools and God delivered me in so many different ways, just the way he delivered David.” At 35, Hammond felt he was starting all over again. Said Hammond: “That can make you tired. I’ve been doing this since I was 22. I had to pray all the time: ‘Lord, don’t let this desensitize me. Rejuvenate me daily.’” The Queen City Mass Choir, directed by Curtis Dean, will also perform.
