New league groupings Hear the beat In sports, the middle schools are new and improved this year. Since more junior high schools (7-9 grades) have converted to middle school (6-8 grades) the conferences have changed. The new conferences are as follows: Northern - Alexander, Coulwood, Marie G. Davis, Ranson, Spaugh, Northwest and Wilson. Southern - Alexander Graham, Carmel, Kennedy, Quail Hollow, Randolph, Sedgefield, Smith, South Charlotte. Eastern - Cochrane, Albemarle Road, Eastway, Hawthorne, McClintock, Northeast, Northridge and Piedmont. In order for students in middle school to play sports, Charlott e-Mecklenburg encourages students to seek and maintain high academic achievement. All students must have at least a 2.0 grade point aver age and attend school at least 85% of the time. Students that turn 15 before the Oct. 16 cannot partici pate in any sports. Sixth graders, new at most middle schools, may not par ticipate on or be a manager for any sports team. Student athletes also must have a yearly physical by a duly licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physi cians assistant. Individuals or teams may not except prizes, merchandise or money. Athletes may not practice during the school day. Students and parents must attend a meeting at the beginning of the season. At this meeting students and parents sign pledges that students and parents will be models of good sportsman ship. Student athletes must be good students first and ath letes second. Classwork must be maintained on as high a level as the athlete is capable of performing. Athletes must be on time for games, practice, class and school. This week a trio calied Upscaie appears at 3 p.m. Reading Rainbow Della Scales, a Briarwood Elementary School 3rd grader, and Kabray Myers, a Chantilly Elementary School 2nd grader, were winners in the 1997 Reading Rainbow writing contest spon sored by WTVI. The shows will be in October. The production is part of the citywide “Oz” project, which uses L. Frank Baum's stoiy as part of the school curriculum in grades K-8. Discovery Place will host a concurrent “Oz” related exhibit. The Childrens Theatre is celebrating its 50th year with the lavish musical pro duction. In addition to weekday performances for the school children, weekend evening and matinee performances are planned. Jumping for Wellness Briefs On Saturday and Sunday, the Mecklenburg County Health Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Atlantic Health Plans and the Wellness Plan of N.C. will conduct "KinderGuard - Getting Kids Ready To Learn,” a 2-day kindergarten physical and immunization event. KinderGuard will be held firom 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Beatties Ford Road Health Department, 2845 Beatties Ford Road. There is no charge and no appointment is necessary. A parent or responsible adult must accompany the child and bring tihe child's shot records. For more information, call 3364667. Androgeena, a Real Puppet, will entertain in the Public Library's CityFair Series on 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Sept 27. The CityFair Series is a once-a-month program for the whole family. Androgeena tells stories, sings, quotes poetry and rap and does improvisational comedy. Her storytelling interactions are designed to stimulate creative thinking, a "can do" attitude, a sense of self-worth and a love of reading.
