AACT to perform at Spirit Square
The Afro-American Childrens
Theatre will present “TTie Wiz”
this weekend and next in the
NationsBeink Theater at Spirit
Square in downtown Charlotte.
Showtimes are 4 p.m. and 8
p.m. Saturday and Sunday and
again Nov. 22 and 23.
Admission is $12 for the gen
eral public and $6 for children
10 and under. Group rates are
also available. To purchase
tickets or inquire about group
rates contact the Performing
Arts Box Office at 371-1000,
weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m.
The production features
Ranata Wingo as Dorothy,
Courtney Love as the
Scarecrow, Larry Yeargin as
the Tinman, Charlton Dews as
the Lion, Drena Howard as
Addaperle Dumasuni
Ephraim as the Great and
Powerful Wiz, as well as MaKa
Dawkins, Angela Clay and
Shekinah Williams.
The AACT company will also
perform for the Charlotte-
Mecklenburg Schools system,
as well as private schools Nov.
17, 19th and 21st. Those per
formances will also be at Spirit
Square.
The Wiz is being presented in
conjunction with the Cultural
Education Collaborative's
World of Oz project, which
kicked off Oct. 4 and includes
the Children's Theater's perfor
mance of The Wizard of Oz.
The Wiz is adapted from the
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
by Frank L. Baum. The AACT
production is made possible by
special arrangement with
Samuel L. French, Inc. and is
directed by Charlotte native
April Turner.
The AACT was founded in
1981 by Barbara Ferguson to
foster artistic, cultural and
social development of children
ages 5-18.

This year’s Right Moves For Youth fishing tournament caught a
bucket of winners. In the women's division, Kim Sturdivant and
Quantoria Crawford narrowly defeated their competition by col
lectively catching six fish. In the men’s division, Dave
Scheppegrell, right, and Eric Stewart, left, were the big winners,
netting 25 fish. More than 20 young people participated and
each received a trophy. Some took home basketballs, portable
radios and other prizes. Right Moves mentors won gift certifi
cates to Harper’s Restaurant.

The Winterfield Cowboys are going to the big time! The Cowboys,
made up of 8 - and 9-year- olds, will play in the Junior Jaguars Bowl
Nov. 21-22 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Cowboys will also play at half
time of the Carolina Panthers-Green Bay Packers game Dec. 14 at
Ericsson Stadium.

Seven local children participating in NWA fundraising contest Sunday
The seven children are participants in the National Women of Achievement’s annual fund raiser. Proceeds will benefit numerous local and
national charities including the United Negro College Fund, A Child’s Place, Charlotte Emergency Housing and Crisis Assistance Ministry.
