■ 3B WEDDINGS/The Charlotte Post Thursday, March 26, 1998 Two types of gowns, hundreds of variations By Jeri Young THE CHARLOTTE POST 'There are two basic types of gowns, says designer Laveme SUerbe Chisolm. \ While there are literally hun dreds of variations on each, the basic shape remains the same. ■ “Its really a matter of getting ihe gown that best accentuates your positives and draws atten tion from the negative,”she said. “After yattve shopped around, yottU realize there are two basic fypes —straight and full.” ; Straight gowns are fitted from thp neckline to the floor, while fitU gowns are fitted only from the neckline to the waist. Each has benefits. “Most people don’t want a poofy gownf’Ellerbe said. “But a full gown can actually be very flattering on certain figures.” For women with large busts ami srruM hips and legs, Chisolm suggests a fitted bodice with a sweetheart neckline. The rounded neckline will minimize the bust line and draw attention dowmvard. The bot tom of the gown depends on the size of the hips. If the bride wants, she can wear a gown thafs fitted all the way down, but a fuller skirt will give the illusion of balance between the bust and hips. A proportioned fuller figure womatis best gown choice deperuls on height. “Ifshds taller, a she could eas ily wear a fitted gown,” Chisolm said. “Ifs just a matter of fitting it to them. But fuller women should stay away from full gowns. They can rrmke you look rrtuch larger.” A straight gown fora fuller fig ure should taper slightly from the hip down to give the illusion of thinness. “Straight gowns am be very ftatterirtg on fuller women,”said VerrteU Funderburk, owrter of Bridals by Verrtell. “Its just a matter of having it fittedproper- ly.” Chisolm suggests thin worrren with a small bust line and hips choose fuller gowns, which will give the illusion of proportion. A ivoman with small breasts and full hips can go either ivay. “A padded top will balance out fun, skirts or straight skirts,” Chisolm said. “It just depends on what illusion you ivarrt” As a rule of thumb, gowns bought off the rack shouldbe fit ted by a professional seamstress.
