Rwandans sentenced
for genocide crimes

A Rwandan court has
found 18 people guilty of
massacring thousands of cit
izens seeking refuge in a
church.
Those found guilty were
among the leaders of militias
and civilians who attacked
Nyarubuye Roman Catholic
Church, Kibungo, in April
1994, killing almost all the
20,000 fleeing Tutsis and
Hutu sympathizers who had
sought refugee in the
church.
The attackers returned to
the church the following day
to ‘’finish off” sutvivors of the
previous day’s massacre, the
state prosecutor, Martin
Rwisumbula, had told the
court.
A leader of the group
responsible for the killings,
Gitera Rwamuhizi, was sen
tenced to 25 years in prison
after he pleaded guilty to
having killed 10 people. The
rest were sentenced to terms
ranging from seven to 16
years.
In June 2002, the
Rwandan government
laimched the Gacaca justice
system — which merges
western and traditional
court structures - in a bid to
expedite trials for more than
100,000 genocide suspects
who are held in the country’s
congested prisons.
At a separate trial, held in
Tanzania, two Rwandan
radio station executives
were convicted of genocide
crimes and sentenced to 35
years in prison for broadcast
ing messages to "extermi
nate” Hutus and moderate
Tutsi and also broadcasting
the names and addresses of
individuals to be killed.
A Rwandan newspaper
editor was sentenced to life
for a similar incitement.
At least 800,000 people
died during the April-June
1994 genocide in Rwanda.
