7A NEWS/tEte CInlotte Thursday, January 22, 2004 PEOPLE OF NOTE Benlon earns nalional diabetes educator stains FROM STAFF REPORTS Zeleka Benton RN has achieved Certified Diabetes Educator status by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Candidates must meet education and profes sional prac tice experience requirements to take the exam. Achieving Benton the CDE credential demon strates distinct and special ized knowledge in caring for patients with diabetes. There are currently more than 13,000 diabetes educa tors nationwide who hold the CDE credential. Benton is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She is a member of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority and treasurer of Metrolina Association of Diabetes Educators. She is also a mentor for the Urban League. Benton has been a diabetes educator for three years at the Presbyterian Diabetes Resource Center at PrimeCare Medical Center, Beatties Ford Road. • Jimmy Allen has com pleted 30 hours of continuing education as a member in the National Association of Enrolled Agents. Enrolled agents are tax professionals who have demonstrated technical expertise in the field of taxa tion. The EA designation is earned by passing a two-day examination administered by the Internal Revenue Service or by working a min imum of five years at the IRS in a position where the provisions of the IRS code and regulations were regu larly applied and interpret ed. Enrolled agents are licensed to represent taxpay ers before all administrative levels of the IRS for audits, collections and appeals. • Melody Covington of Matthews has accepted academic membership in Golden Key achievers by International Honour providing Society. opportuni- Covington is a student at ties for indi- Norfolk State University in v i d u a 1 Virginia. growth Golden Key provides acad- through emic recognition to college leadership, juniors and seniors in the top career devel- 15 percent of their class. Robinson placed the monu ment in front of City HaU on Monday while it was closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. He said he was inspired by Alabama’s oust ed chief justice, who placed a similar monument in his court building. Robinson said he paid the $2,000 cost of buying and moving the monument himself. Mayor Allen Joines called the move divisive. “Obviously, if you are going to do something hke this, this is not the right way to do it,” Joines said Monday. “We are working hard to bring the city together. Actions hke this tend to push people apart.” Robinson, who is running for the Republican nomina tion for Congress, had said he didn’t get permission to put up the marker because he didn’t know the proce dure. Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore placed a 2 1/2-ton Ten Commandments momunent in the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building in 2001 and was ousted last year for refusing to obey a federal court order to remove it. The federal judge found the monument to be an unconstitutional governmental promotion of rehgion. Report criticizes Iraq policy MINNESOTA SPOKESMAN-RECORDER MINNEAPOLIS — A study released recently by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said, “Officials misrepre sented threat from Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction and baUistic missiles programs over and above intelligence find ings.” The report challenged two of the Bush Administration’s claims that led up to the war with Iraq. The administration said that Iraq had links to terrorist networks and possessed weapons that could pose an imminent threat to the United States. But the Carnegie report brings into question the adminis tration’s failure to establish a fink between Iraq and terrorist networks. There was “no sohd evidence” that Saddam Hussein was connected to Osama bin-Laden or al Qaeda, the report said. It also stated that Iraq’s nuclear program had been suspended for many years.
