Cole is Bennett’s 14th pres ident. She made history in 1987 when she became the first African-American woman elected president of Spelman College, where it became the first HBCU to receive a number one rating by U.S. News and World report magazine when it was named the top liberal arts college in the South. Cole will sign copies of her most recent book immediate ly after the banquet. Mercedes, a student at Brisbane Academy, will join a select group of students June 10-19. Participants gain insights to guide their edu cational professional careers through work shops, presentations, excursions and discus sions. The summits focus on leadership, team building, college admissions and professional aspirations in law, medicine and health care. • Joseph “Jake” Suggs -will be inducted into the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Officials hall of Fame Feb. 26 in Raleigh. Suggs, a graduate of Charlotte Catholic High School and Winston-Salem State University, is a long time official in football, soft ball, and basketball on the amateur level in addition to his work in the CIAA. Smith University graduate, served for 10 years as executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus, where she was responsible for the overall management of member and constituent activities.
