NEWS/^l)e Charlotte $aslt Thursday, April 8, 2004 PEOPLE OF NOTE Lattimore promoted to Air \ National Guard general Make 8:05 on Tuesday night feel like 8:05 on Saturday morning. The Rev. Vergel Lattimore was recently pro moted to brigadier general in the Air National Guard. Lattimore, a Charlotte native, was pinned in February during a ceremony at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. He is the first African American chap lain to reach the rank in the Air National Guard and the United States Air Force. Lattimore, a 1975 graduate of Livingstone College, serves as the primary liaison Lattimore between the ANG and USAF chaplain services. A member of the Armed Forces Chaplains Board, Lattimore and other members serve as advisers to the secretary of defense and the Joints Chiefs of Staff on religion, ethical and quality-of-life concerns. • Davidson IB Middle School varsity and junior varsity teams placed first in the N.C. Science Olympiad March 27 at Johnson C. Smith University. The win was Davidson’s eighth straight. The coach is Ralph Pillsbury. Davidson competed in the B Division for grades 6-9 in 25 events. The varsity squad won 17 first-place medals and three second- place medals. The junior vai^ity claimed 14 first-place medals and six sec ond place finishes. Both teams will compete in the state championships at N.C. State University April 23-24. • Latasia Fields, a sopho more at Providence Day School, has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Felder Conference in Washington. The conference, which 8,000 students fi'om around the world are expected to attend, features workshops and classes on leadership. Latasia is the daughter of Ann Fields of Charlotte. • Rebecca Felder of McClintock Middle School was honored as Charlotte- Meklenburg’s top teachers last month.
