mmmm 6B RELIGION/tEIie C^rlstte Thursday, April 29, 2004 Education a must for new ministers Continued from page 8B “Fm going to pray about it and see where God leads me,” Ford said. Herman Thomas Ph.D., professor of religious studies at UNC Charlotte, said it is recommended that after a person is called to be a minister, that he or she is mentored by a person already ordained as a minister. “After some training and talking to, then it is recommended that the person goes to school for theological education,” Thomas said, adding that education can come from the church’s local governing body or a theological school. “There’s more to being a minister than preaching. The bibli cal meaning of minister is one who serves. A lot of folk preach, but haven’t been ordained A calling does not bring on certifica tion. It is a life long process of growth.” Jfirsit fHt.
