3A NEWS/(C6e diarlDtte Thursday, May 6, 2004 College honors employee tn^e !D()arlotte Continued from page 1A side to side. She was at a loss for words. “What can I say,” Houston said. “Somebody tell me what can I say.” Davidson’s laundry service is unique because it has always required a mandatory fee at the college. Students are assigned indi vidual laundry numbers when they enroll, and drop off clothes and linens for cleaning as they wish. Shirts are washed and pressed and returned on hangers, while other clothes are washed and folded, and returned in brown craft paper. Houston stayed at Davidson simply because she loved her job. “I never had any problems here,” she said. “I’ve always treated people the way I want to be treated.” Houston started work at the school when she was 18 and left briefly to go to Washington, D.C. She returned in 1948 and has been there ever since. Her four children grew up on the campus, and her oldest daugh ter, Peggy Rivens, was blown away by the out pouring of love for her mother. “It’s good to see her love has not gone unrec ognized,” Rivens said as she watched Houston hug well-wishers. Houston is the kind of person people can’t help but say good things about. Davidson alum Joe Harris drove from Washington to see Houston. He said Houston never seemed to have a bad day and always treated stu dents with respect and love. “She was like a grandmother to me,” he said. Harris, who graduated from Davidson two years ago, said the he has kept in contact with Houston since he left school. Davidson president Bobby Vagt said Houston is the kind of person who actually hs- tens to you when she says how are you doing. “Her love is infectious and she gives it freely to anyone and everyone,” said Aaron Jackson, Houston’s manager.
