4B LIFE/trtieClariotte^act Thursday, May 13, 2004 Rock Hill sorority holds annual May Week celebration By Harold M, Tyson SPECIAL TO THE POST On May 2, the Rock Hill Alumnae Chapter of Delta sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held their annual May Week celebration honoring approx imately 180 local high school students for their achieve ments. Theme for the cere mony was “Encouraging Leadership for Tbmorrow”. Soror Tiffany A. Burris presided over the affair with soror Susie Hinton offering the scripture and invocation. Soror Soancera Luuqman spoke of the significance of May Week to the sorority. Brandi Feemster gave two musical performances and soror Edwina Roseboro- Barnjs introduced the keynote speaker. Rock Hill Police Chief John Gregory offered the main address in which he admon ished the honorees to follow his mantra, “Pass it on bet ter than you received it.” Gregory, a native of High Point and graduate of Shaw University in Raleigh, is Rock Hill’s first black chief of police. Relating several per sonal experiences, he implored the youth to contin ue to strive to improve their lives and world. Afterwards, awards were presented to students of Clover Comprehensive, Northwestern, Rock Hill, and York high schools in the areas of student govenunent leadership, academic achievement, good citizen ship, unselfish service, ath letic accomplishment, gifted and talented, and overall distinguished leadership. Dwayne Hicks, Travis Hill, and Daniel Mobley, each received a $500 book schol arship. Four young women, Brooke Barber, Toni Blackwell, Britney Spratt, and Johnteria Walton each received a $1500 tuition scholarship. Following the student awards, Cynthia Bryant received the “Soror of the Year Award.” In accepting the award, she extolled the virtues, values, and beliefs of Delta Sigma Theta, urging the students to find a way to become productive in society in various ways.
