UNDER THE BANNER WHAT'S GOING ON IN AND AROUND BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS CIAA SCHOLAR / ATHLETES: The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has announced the recipients of the Male and Female Scholar- Athlete of the Year Award; Shannon Davis of Winston- Salem State and Luqman Jaaber of Virginia Union. This honor, in its third year, rewards student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and in the athletic arena. Davis is a Junior Business Administralion/Sporl Management double-major from Detroit. She is a two-sport athlete at WSSU competing in bowling and softball. Davis was a major contributor on the 2003- 04 WSSU Bowling team that competed for the Inaugural NCAA National Championship in Houston. She is also two-time All-CIAA in softball and had a hefty .375 batting average and carries a 3.65 grade point aver age. However, Davis’ major suc cess was not achieved in the classroom or on the playing field. She is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with the ’ disease during her freshman year. Jaaber, a sophomore computer science major from Richmond is a member of the VUU basketball team. Jaaber was a member of the 2003-04 Panther squad that won the CIAA Tournament Champion ship and advanced to the NCAA playoffs. Jaaber was an All- CIAA performer, and a member of the All-Tournament team. He finished second in the nation in free throw percentage (.089), VUU Photo first in the CIAA in steals (3.48 JAABER: VUU hoops and second in the confer- all-star has 3.55 GPA. • u c £ ence with 5.6 assists per game. Jaaber has a 3.55 grade point average. Both Davis and Jaaber will represent the CIAA as nominees for the Division II Conference Commissioners South Atlantic Region Scholar- Athlete of the Year and will be recognized at the 2004 CIAA Spring Awards Luncheon on May 27th in Raleigh. TOP POINT GUARD TO TSU: Reiley Ervin, the most valuable player of the 2004 Tennessee High School AAA State Tournament, has signed a grant- in-aid to play college basketball for the Tennessee State University Tigers. "We are delighted that Reiley is joining our program and I think he was one of the lop three point guards in the slate this past season." said TSU head coach Cy .Alexander. "We look forward to the future and he will have a positive impact on our program." Ervin (5-10. 170) w as a member of three state title teams for White Station High and coach Terry Tippett. He averaged 15 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.0 steals a game this season as While Station finished with an overall 39-2 record. He made 80 percent of his free throw attempts, shot 40 percent from 3-poini range, and shot better than 50 percent overall from the field. In three games in the state tournament, he averaged 18.0 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.0 steals. In the Spartans title game win over Jackson North Side, he tallied 26 points, handed out six assists, and recorded three steals. "Reiley will have a positive effect on Tennessee Slate's basketball program, both on the court and off the court." said Tippett. "He is a tremendous young man. leader, and the TSU fans will certainly enjoy watching him play over the next four years." In addition to his success on the court. Ervin is also an outstanding student in the classroom. He is looking at several areas to study at TSU. The White State team won the AAA state title three of Ervin’s four seasons and has captured the crown four of the past five seasons. Valley State (Women) TENNIS Men • Southern Women - Southern VOLLEYBALL Alabama A&M Southern sweeps SWAC awards Southern University athletic programs captured the 2003-04 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All-Sports Championships in both the Men's and Women's Divisions and retained their hold on the Dr. James Frank Commissioners Cup Award. Alabama State finished second in both men and women’s divisions and also finished second in the Commissioner's Cup race. The Southern Jaguars' men's programs captured three of the eight SWAC championships (foot ball, cross-country and tennis) for a total of 71.5 points to capture the C.D. Henry Award for the men's All-Sports Championship. Alabama Slate finished second with 65 points. Southern has won four con secutive C.D. Henry Awards. The Jaguars' women's pro grams captured five (bowling, golf, indoor track, outdoor track and ten nis) of ten SWAC championships for a total of 93 points to capture the Barbara Jacket / Sadie Magee Award for the women’s All-Sporls Championship. Alabama State and Alcorn State tied for second with CUP BEARERS: Southern Athletic Director, Floyd Kerr, Senior Woman’s Administrator, DeBorah Paui, receive SWAC Commissioners cup from SWAC Commissioner Robert Vowels 73.5 points each. The Jaguars have won six consecutive Jacket/Magee Awards. The Commissioner's Cup, the newly named. Dr James Frank Award, is awarded to the school with the best combined total of the all sports awards. Southern tallied 164.5 points, followed by Alabama Slate with 138.5 points. Southern has won four of the last five and five of the last seven Commissioner’s Cup Awards. The awards were presented to Southern University athletic direc tor. Valley State 76 St. Augustine’s, Virginia State take CIAA awards The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) presented Virginia State University with the Loretta Taylor Women's Alt- Sports Trophy and Saint Augustine's College with the C.H. Williams Men's All-Sports Trophy at the Annual Award's luncheon Thursday in Raleigh. Virginia State won the Taylor award for women's sports excellence after conceding that title to Shaw last year. This is VSU's fourth lime winning the award in five years. VSU won two champi onships this year, softball and bowling, while coming in second in three sports, cross country, indoor track and field and tennis. St Aug's dominated in men's championship titles this year with top finishes in cross country, outdoor and indoor track and field. SAC's three champi onships, along with exceptional finishes in football and men’s basketball, placed them in position for recognition. The Taylor and Williams trophies are deter mined by a point system established to award an institution for achievement in each of their women's and men's programs. The champion is the institution with the most combined total points for all sponsored sports based on their conference finish and the num ber of CIAA sponsored events. Chris Zona, sports information director at Winston-Salem State University was awarded the John Holley Sports Information Director Award. Zona's achievement in broadening WSSU's archival database has given the Rams' athletic department an edge in providing reporters excellent records on WSSU history. Chris has also been instrumental in expanding the Rams’ athletic website. Michael Bailey of Virginia Union University and Tonia Walker of WSSU have been named Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator of the Year. Both individuals have made concentrat ed efforts to maximize the potential of their men's and women's programs, while maintaining equality between both programs. This ycar'i Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award has been presented to A! Carter, Director of Athletics at Shaw University for providing extraor dinary leadership for the Bears’ Athletic Department. Smith Spring Sports Round-Up MVSU softball run SWAC softball champion Mississippi Valley State made an impressive and historic mn through NCAA Region 2 in Los Angeles before a 5-0 loss to Long Beach State Saturday put them out of the double-elimination tourney. The Delta Devils were beaten 8-0 by region top-seed UCLA, before getting victories over Missouri (4-3) and Cornell (6-0), the first wins ever for a SWAC team in NCAA softball tournament play. "It can be done! We are letting everyone know that we play great softball at MVSU and that we can play on a national level," stated MVSU Head Coach Lee Smith after the two wins. "We're not just trying to win a conference championship, but we want to compete on a national level and win on a national level." Natasha McFadden’s three-mn homer in the bottom of the 6th inning lifted the MVSU ladies to their historic win over Missouri, elim inating the Lady Tigers. They followed that up with the victory over Cornell as Tonya Johns and Nakelya Morgan both had two hits and two RBI. Long Beach State erupted for five runs with two outs in the lop of the seventh to beat the Delta Devilettes in Saturday’s semifinals. During the tournament, MVSU became the first SWAC team to ever win a game in the NCAA Softball tournament and later became the first SWAC team in any sport to win multiple games in an NCAA tourney. The Delta Devilettes end their season at 33-17. B-CC hangs tough It took tw'o hard-fought close contests to knock Mid Eastern Athletic Conference softball champion Bethune-Cookman out of the 2004 NCAA double-elimination Softball Regional in Tallahassee, FI. The Lady Wildcats gave up only three runs in two losses but were not able to push across.any of their own in dropping decisions to Oregon and Ohio State. Oregon scored the only run in the bottom of the second inning but it was enough for a 1-0 vic tory over B-CC Thursday. It look extra innings for Ohio State to subdue the Lady Wildcats as they scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to eliminate B-CC. 2-0. B-CC ended its season with a 44-28 record. MEAC track qualifiers The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will have 81 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship qualifiers competing in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Regional Championships held May 28-29 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FI. MEAC qualifiers will be competing for spots in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field , Nationals held June 9-12 in Austin. Texas. North Carolina A&T's men and women track programs lead the MEAC with 15 total qualifiers. Florida A&M. the men's 2004 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field co-Champions, tied in second with Hampton with 12 total stu dent-athlete qualifiers apiece. Spring destinations The Southwestern Athletic Conference is holding its annual Spring Business Meeting in Biloxi. Ms., this week while the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meets in Raleigh and the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference convenes in Las Vegas. All three conferences are bringing in administrators, coaches and office personnel to review performances over the past year and formulate policies, procedures and strategies for the future.
