6B RELIGION/Xie Ctatlstte $oat Thursday, June 30, 2005 Unpopular tenet ponders: Is Jesus the savior of the world? THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The World Council of Churches recently was host to 130 representatives from 10 world faiths for major talks on interreiigious rela tions. The WCC, which encompasses 340 mainline Protestant and Orthodox denominations, considers this a “core issue.” At the session, WCC chief executive Samuel Kobia, a Kenya Methodist, proposed new definitions for words including “conversion” and '^missions.” “If there is anything that we need to convert, it is the mentality of people to become true human persons,” said Kobia, ‘Our common mission ary vocation is to transform the world to be truly human, to recover our common humanity” More directly, Muslim polit ical scientist Reba Raouf Ezzat from Egypt said reh- gions must enter a “post-con- version” era, forsaking prose- lytism. Yet Islam is so intent on absolute truth that it deems defections to other faiths intolerable. Some Muslim nations make conversion punishable by death, others treat it as a less severe crime and private vigilantes some times punish converts. Christianity’s toughest issue, perhaps, is addressed in “Is Jesus the Only Savior?’ ('Eerdmans) by James R. Edwards. He answers with an ^nphatic yes. Though a clergyman in a WCC member, the Presbyter ian Church (U.S.A.), and the ology chairman at Presbyter ian Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., Edwards wasn’t the sort invited to the confei'ence. In his denomina tion, 1,300 congregations have joined a movement that insists “Jesus Christ alone is Lord of aU and the way of sal vation.” This belief is also endorsed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger — now Pope Bene dict XVI —in “TVuth and Tbl- erance: Christian Belief and World Religions” (Ignatius). The pope asserts that Chris tianity “fix>m its very origin Please seeAN/5B Your weekly source of timely, relevant news from a black perspective. Muslim woman sues over right to wear her head scarf ADVERTISEMENT THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ORLANDO, Fla. —A Mus lim woman sued an apart ment management company Wednesday, alleging that she was denied a job at an Orlan do complex because she refused to remove her head scarf for religious reasons. Danine Hanmiond joined a gi'owing list of Muslim women nationwide allegiiig discrimi nation over theii’ “hijab” or head scaif, which some Mus lim women say they are required to wear because of modesty Hammond says in the state court lawsuit that when she showed up for the first day of work in Apiil 2004 at the Chapel Trace Apartments, office manager Olga Sierra called her into her office and told hei* that she wouldn’t be allowed to work “dressed like that.” When the office manager told Hammond to take off her head scarf, Hammond said she couldn’t and asked to speak to a supervisor about making an accommodation, the lawsuit said. Hammcaid, who lives in the apartment complex, was sent home and told she would be contacted by telephone. The lawsuit said that she was never contacted by the apartment complex’s man agement company, Miami- based Housing Thust Man- Please see MUSLIM/5B Academy has religious intolerence Continued from page 7B School officials said her transfer was routine. Air Force investigators spent several days at the school earlier this year, look ing into complaints that evan- gehcal Chiistians wield so much influence that anti- Semitism and other forms of rehgious harassment have become pervasive. There have been complaints at the academy that a Jewish cadet was told the Holocaust was revenge for the death of Jesus and that another Jew was called a Christ killer by a fellow cadet. A banner in the football team’s loker room lead: “I am a Christian first and last... I am a member of Tfeam Jesus Christ.” Also, there have been com plaints that cadets were pres sured to attend chapel, that academy staffers put New Tfestament verses in govern ment e-mail, and that cadets used the e-mail system to encourage others to see the Mel Gibson movie “The Pas sion of the Christ.” Capps and Israel said the report conflicts with com ments that school supeiin- tendent Lt. Gen. John Rosa made to reporters earlier this month. At the time, Rosa said: “I know I have problems in my cadet wing. I have issues in my staff, and I have issues in my faculty —and that’s my entire organiza tion.” The Prophet’s Column, Inc. 9626 Feldbank Drive Charlotte, NC 28216-2131 June, 2005 Newsletter - Part III (Last Part) Years ago, when I was coming up in the religious world at West Deep Creek Baptist Church, R.E. Lindsay was the pastor. He was invited to preach one Sunday night up in White Store community at Meltonville Baptist Church. I went to hear him. I'll never forget a statement Bro. Lindsay made from the pulpit that night that followed me. He made this statement; "They tell me that with every breath you breathe you are sinning against God. If that is true, hell is going to be your home!" Someone may ask me: "Alright, Bro. Little, what about that statement?" Friend, out of Christ, in every breath you breathe, you are sinning against a holy and righteous God. And unless you flee to Christ and are covered by His Blood, hell is going to be your home! What will you do about it? You are going out into eternity and you are going to meet the Lord. It is far better to meet the Lord here and be broken. If you don't meet the Lord here. He'll meet you on the other side. You-cannot get around dealing with the eternal Son of God. It is so sad to see you elderly go on not knowing the Lord. Some of you have told me: "We were brought up in the church and we are going to stay in the church." Alright, stay in your church and go to hell for your trouble. That is exactly what you will do. But every truth will one day witness against you. Oh, how sad to see you go on without Christ! You've been in the church all your life, but seemingly the Lord has become silent to you. Great religionists will tell you: "As long as there is life there is hope." I'll answer you from the Word of God; in Genesis 4, God cursed Cain. Was there any hope for Cain after that? I know, Bible teachers will tell you that if Cain had asked for forgiveness, he would have been saved. What foolishness! Three times in the First Chapter of Romans, Paul said: "God gave them up" or "God gave them over..." A preacher said to me: "God never gives anybody up." What a blind fool! That preacher will get the greatest shock of his life one minute after death. Your Gospel Editor and Teacher, TM.
