6B RELIGION/De CiarlttU $ot Thursday, October 13, 2005 Widely-endorsed public school book cleverly avoids trouble By Richard N,. OstUng TilE ASSOCIATED PRESS Think it’s impossible to cre ate a textbook about the Bible for public hi^ schools that’s acceptable to varied faiths and legal in the eyes of churdi-state separationists? That’s the goal of the Bible Literacy Project of Fairfax, Va. And judging fiom initial reactions, it succeeded hand somely with its new “The Bible and Its Influence,” just issued for use in the 2006- 2007 school year. Bible Literacy’s strategy is to respect all religions and shun divisive controversies about tablical interpretation, merely reporting these when they’re relevant. For instance, here’s how the touchy issues surrounding creation are handled; “Schol ars and faithful readers differ on the date and authorship of Genesis. Even within the first two chapters, some see two distinct creation narratives.... Some read Genesis as a liter al accovint of the mechanics of creation. Still others read it as a poem about God’s relation ship with humans. Many read the book as both.” Consider these endorsers of this textbook • folks who rarely agree on much else: • Robert Alter, Hebrew pro fessor at the Univ«^ity of California, Berkeley • Harold Bloom, Yale Uni versity literary critic (an agnostic in religion) • John Collins, Yale Old Tfes- tament professor (Catholic) • (Charles Colson, prison evangelist (Baptist) • Jean Bethke Elshtain, University of Chicago ethics professor (Lutheran) • Jfed Haggard, president, National Association of Evan gelicals • Frederica Mathewes- Green, Eastern Orthodox author • Joseph Stowell, retired president of the very conserv ative Mcxxly Bible Institute • Bishop Richard Sklba, chairman, Catholic Biblical Association • Marc Stem, American Jewish Congress attorney and advocate for strict church-state separation • Leland Rjhen, English professor at evangelical Please see BiBLE/5B First black churchman has been installed as archbishop of York VIE ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON-The Church of England ranfirmed Ugandan- born John Sentamu on Wednesday as archbishop of York, making him the first black archbishop in the neeirly SOO-year history of the state church. Sentamu has been part of a committee attempting to mend a rift in the church caused by the appointment of an openly homosexual bishop in a diocese of the U S. Epis copal Church. He called for reconciliation on the issue, which has brought the church close to schism, uiging more traditionalist African pri mates not to break with the Andean Communion. But Sentamu said he stood by the Lambeth Resolution of 1998, which rejects homosex ual practice as “incompatible with scripture,” and rules out gay marriage in church. He is the first black person to hold such a senior position in the history of the (2hurch of England since its foimder King Henry Vin broke with the Vatican nearly 500 years ago over his desire to divorce his first wife, Katherine of Aragon. Sentamu succeeds the Most Rev. David Hope, who resigned in 2004 to spend his last years before retirement working as a parish priest. The Prophet’s Column, Inc. 9626 Feldbank Drive Charlotte, NC 28216-2131 September/October, 2005 Newsletter - Part V (Last Part) J.M. Little, Teacher In Rom. 9:13 we find these words: “...Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” A preacher’s wife said to me when I quoted that Scripture: “I can’t conceive of God haling anyone.” Well, that is because the “god” she knows is not the God of the Bible but a figment of her blinded and depraved imagination. You cannot believe one part of the Word of God and not believe another. The “god” you church members worship is a “god” you don't even talk about. You are ashamed to even talk about him and you dismiss it this way: “This is not the place to talk about it.” You church members don’t have anything to live by, let alone die by. One day I was there, my readers. But oh, the love of God in awakening me to my lost condition and breaking me in repentance and revealing Christ to my heart! I stated previously that America and our church folks have not repented. And you haven’t. A young religious leader said to me back in the early 80's: “Repentance is just a change of mind.” But oh, the change of mind that takes place in your heart and mind when the blessed Holy Spirit begins the work of repentance in your heart! It is a change toward God the Father, toward God the Son and toward God the Holy Spirit. Oh the change! It is not the light and frivolous manner you speak lightly of. If this change ever takes place in your mind and heart, it'll scare those around you to death. They won't understand you and will consider you unfit to live. They’ll take an oath to kill you. And if they can’t do that, they’ll disassociate from you. But my friend, the all- important thing is for you to come to know Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Chnst is Salvation! Do you know Him? If not, I call on you to repent! It is repent or perish! Turn or burn! Christ or hell! “The fool hath said in his heart. There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” (Ps.14:1) My friends, my only Hope is Christ and His Soon Coming. Sinner, your only Hope is Christ. Will you turn to Christ? When Christ Comes and takes His Cwn out, the next day the awful Tribulation will begin. Will you be taken when Christ comes? I will. May you turn to Him now!
