7A NEWaUit charlotte $ot Thursday, November 3, 2005 Study: Marriage most beneficial for men Continued from page 1A One major finding is that marriage is highly beneficial for black males throughout the life course. For example, when Afiican-American boys live with their father in the home, particularly their married father, they typical ly receive substantially more parental support. As a result of this better parenting, Afiican American boys with married parents tend to do better in school and are less likely to become delinquent In adulthood, marriage is associated with a range of better outcomes for African American men, fium $4,000 increases in wages to greater happiness with family life. Afiican American females also appear te derive very important benefits from marriage, but these appar ent benefits are smaller than those for males. Another striking finding is that marriage is profoundly important to the economic well-being of black families Study after study consistent ly concludes that marriage is one of the strongest determi nants of economic status for clack Americans, and can often mean the difiference between living above or below the poverty line - espe cially for families with chil dren. One study reviewed by the report found that the family incomes of black single-par ent households increase by an average of 81.2 percent when the parent - almost always a single-mother - gets married. Why is marriage so economically beneficial? Because it often means the addition of a second income to the household and it also tends to make adults more productive, successful work ers. “The Consequences of Marriage for African Americans” was written by Lorraine Blackman of University of Tfexas at Indiana University, Obie Austin, Linda Malone-Colon Clayton of Morehouse, of Hampton and the Norval Glenn of the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center, and Alex Roberts of the Institute for American Values.
