SIAC adds teams, goes to grid divisions THE STAT CORNER WHO ARE THE BEST PERFORMERS IN BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS The Southern lut^coUe^Rte Athletic CoolereDce and its member institutiois announced last wedc that it will move to an East/West Division fixmat for football beginning in the 2006 football season. With the additiHi of CUflin University, Langston Universityand Line Jn University to the conference the SIAC will now move to a six (6)- team East/West format for football (Claflin currently does not sponsor football). The format Tot the East/West Division included consido'ations to keepthe 11-game format for schedul ing, maximum oftwoprotective dates toaccount for traditional rivalries and Classics, and a consideration for a Irxig-term format of at least four (4) years. Under the new East/West format each team'seonfer- oice schedulewillbereducedtoeight games which includes five (5) int«-- divisitxial games and three (3) cross over confo’CTce divisional games. NEW FOOTBALL DIVISIONAL FORMAT EAST DIVISION Albany State Benedict Clark Atlanta Fort Valley State Morehouse Tuskegee WEST DIVISION Kentucky State Lane Langston Lincoln Miles Stillman This allows each team three optional op«i dates for non-con feraice games v«^us oppffl«its outside the cwifer- ence, (x others within the conference to make up the 11-game schedule. A round robin fa-mat was used to configure the crossover-game fa- mat with a hone-and-home rotation occurring befaetheaossover sched ules change. Unda this plan Easton D iv ision sch ools wi 11 have on ly m ini - mal travel coitact with Lincoln and Langstoi in the West meaning no team from the East will have to travel to both Lincoln and Langston during the same season. Currently the SIAChasnotadded a conferoice champion^ip game however the champion of the coifer- oice will be daeimined by the high est winning pocentage of c on feroice games, head to head competition, record against conmoi confooKe {^ponents with full Division II mon- ber^ip, scaing margin in games played among the teams locked in a tie and ovoall recad. The Coifer- oice Champion will represoit the SIAC in the annual Pioieer Bowl unless that team is selected for the NCAA DivisionllPlayoffs, in which the confoence runner-up will be cho sen. Dr. William E. Lide, SIAC Commissioner stated "this isabigstep that the Conference is making The East/West format will allow for our monber institutions to play within a region and also allows for our two new football members, Lincoln and Langston Iftiiversity, to have asmooth transition into the conference while allowing k^ match ups, traditional rivalriesand class icstostilltakeplace. This EastAVest Famat will also gen erate newrivairies and intoiseconpe- titioi between the two sides thus goi- aating exciting SIAC football action across the country on a wedc to week basis." The East/West Famat will also be coisidered for adoptioi fa the 2006-2007 bask^ball season and is already in act ioi in many of the Spring Spats of the SIAC. Taylor hired Beatty on Jan. 6 report edly to get more out of a passing attack which has struggled despite the Pirates winning back-to-back MidElasternAthleticConferencechampionships. The Pirates have lost the past two years in he first round of he NCAA Div. I-AA playoffs. Four quarterbacks threw for more that 3,300 yards in a season during Beatty's eight seasons as a TAYLOR hi^ school coach. Two of he receivers on this year’s Landstown team, Percy Harvin and Damon McDaniel, who have boh landed scholarships to play for Urban Meyer at Florida, were rated among the top ten in the nation at the position. McDaniel's brother Marquay is a wide receiver/kick returner on he Hampton squad. Beatty had not made a secret of his desire to coach on the college level. "Hopefully well be able to throw m ore and use he spread offense," Beatty told th^Hatrg?ton Daily Press. "I hinkihave something to add and can help he program get to he next level. I'm not intimidated by the challenge of coaching on this level." Beatty will assumehis duties on Jan. 15. Black college greats on Div.
