SR-ti museum focuses
on nadonal fimd raising

of the International Civil
Rights Center and Museum
plan to reach across the
nation for help in raising $6
million still needed to help
convert the historic
Woolworth building where
four students started the
national sit-in movement into
a museum.
Tlie project has a total pro
jected cost of $16 million. An
analysis of the center’s
finances by the News &
Record of Greensboro this
summer showed it had spent
$5 million of the approximate
ly $7 million raised by then.
Fund-raisers will also again
reach out to local residents in
the effort to bring in more
money, while reaching out
beyond the state’s borders for
the first time.
“There has not been a
national capital campaign
prior to this,” said Amelia
Parker, the center’s executive
director.
She declined to discuss
details of the campaign while
prepaiing for an official
announcement in mid-
January: The center expects
to announce two m^or dona
tions along with the start of
the campaign.
The museum was founded
11 years ago as a memorial to
the non-violent protest that
sparked a national move
ment.
In 1960, four students fix)m
North Carolina A&T State
Univeraty sat down at the
“whites only” lunch counter at
the Woolworth department
store in downtown
Greensboro and refused to
leave until they were served.
The museum had been
scheduled to open in July but
the debut was delayed after
structural problems were dis
covered with the 75-year-old
building.
Center leaders also hope to
improve the building’s interi
or to standards that would
allow them to exhibit artifacts
