7B RELIGION/S|e C^i(otte $o«t Thursday, March 30t^CX)6 New Orleans Archdiocese shutters historic churchr WE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW • ORLEANS-The Ardidiocese of New Orleans announced Monday that it would close one of the nation’s oldest blade Catholic church es for the foreseeable future after protesters inte-rupted Mass on Sunday Protest®:^, most of whom are not members of St. Avigustine’s, have been occu- pyii^ the rectory for a week, saying they will not leave until the parish is reinstated. Archbishop Alfred Hughes, during a news conference, said he had no choice but to close St. Augustine Church because protesters had dese crated it by mterruptii^ Mass. It cannot be reopened, he said, until it is consecrated again He also ordered those holed up in the rectory to immedi ately vacate the property He did not indicate what steps would be taken if the protest ers did not voluntarily leave. The parish at St. Augus tine’s was slated to be merged with larger St. Peter Claver. It wasn’t to have its own priest or membership, but the church itself was to remain open for Mass and occasional weddings or funerals until Monday’s announcement. The consohdation was announced as part of the archdiocese’s effort to deal with $84 million in uninsured losses following Hurricane Katrina, but Hi^hes said Monday that the primary con cern was not financial. St. Augustine’s had faded to add many new members or carry on other pastoral functions required of a parish, Hughes said. “This is a very painful, painful decision to have to make and to implement. I don’t take any joy in this,” he drawn a lot of attention because it is among the nation’s oldest Roman Catholic parishes, fovmded by white and free people of color in 1841. The fi«e black mem bers of the congregation bought pews in the church so slaves could attend Mass. The Treme neighborhood chinch, which had about 350 families before Hurricane Katrina, remains a racially diverse congregatiesn. “We’re ad one. We’re diversi- He also said the church has not been treated any diffoent from others in the archdio- fied. We’re as close to utopia as you get here. There is no color,” said parishioner Doretha Augustus, who was standing outside the church where signs were posted say ing “Save our parish” and ‘We . shall not be moved” Parishioners have appealed the decision and plan to take their case to the Vatican if Hughes refuses to ovaium the decisian. Sandra Gordon, the presi dent of St. Augustine’s pas toral couned, said that in the meantime, parishioners and protesters would stay at the church. ‘We wdl continue to peace fully occupy the facilities because this is our parish. It is the property of the congre gation, not the arthdiocese,”she said, trem bling as she read a statement on Monday On the Net: Archdiocese of New Orleans: wwwxtrch-no£>rg ADVERTISEMENT But St. Augustine’s has Former SWV front woman strikes out on her new path: Gospel music By Chens F. She has appeared on The Lord’s Church Cathedral Choir’s project “Some How, Some Way” and “Mdnight” with Brent Jones and TP. Mobb. The Prophet’s Column, Inc. 6183 NC 109 South Wadesboro, NC 28170-9533 April, 2006 Newsletter - Part I My Dear Friends: The greatest thing in all this world is just to know Christ as your Lord and your Saviour. Do you know Him? Those of us who know Him do not know the full meaning of that great eternal truth. When God saved me back there 34 years ago, I stood amazed. All my sin burden was gone. The pit of noise was gone. The Lord flooded my heart with a joy and peace I had never known, i cannot tell the greatness of salvation in Christ, for I am feeble and clay. There are no words in all the languages of the world to tell of the greatness of Christ and what it means to know Him. Spring has arrived. Spring testifies of the resurrection of Christ. The sinner being resurrected to new life in Christ. I was dead, but God raised me from the dead. He quickened me together with Christ. (Eph. 2:5) He justified me by His grace and Blood. (Rom. 5:9,21) If you knew what it means to know Christ, you would not run around here saying “I accepted Jesus as my Saviour". That is the concrete evidence you know literally nothing about Christ and His death on the Cross for sinners, And the Easter Babylonian celebration has nothing in the world to do with the Crucifixion of Christ. Easter is a pagan goddess. There are two truths that go side by side throughout God’s eternal Word: election and reprobation. Down through the years, since God commissioned me to teach His Word, I’ve brought several studies on these two great truths. If you have learned these two great truths, election and reprobation, you have made a great advancement in the realm of Divine truth. Both are taught in God's Word. To deny one is to deny the other. To deny one or the other is to call God a liar. You may say you don’t see them. One day I didn’t, either. When I was in the religious world, teaching as a lost man, I knew nothing of God's elect and God’s reprobation. Jfirsit Hit.
