Is it a Bible? Under this photo is the cap tion “Indifferent.” . Another Simpson photograph features a young black woman’s hand over a bassinet. 'The image also gives a vague feeling that her hand is over a wedding veil. Under this photo is the caption, “Carried a gun.” How great to see the work of Anne Kessler Shields of "VWn- ston-Salem in this exhibit! Shields, who was well known' for her optical art prints in the 1960;s and 1970s where for example red dots would float before a green field of color, now in her “wallpaper” as she described it in an interview at the McColl center, she says, “I started to concentrate more upon how the viewer looks at photographic images.” She says for 15 years she has looked in publications such as Interview, W, and Vanity Pair at the erotic nature of fashion and she has been comparing contempo rary violence with violence as it is depicted in art history In one of her ‘WaUpapCTs” here we see a photo of President Bush holding a Bible, colorful drawings of the Crusades, an unknown topless glamorous women wearing a cross, a black man covered in biceps tatoos wearing a cross and five panels of the names and hcmetowns of those killed m Iraq. “Stereotypes; Confronting Cliches” is definitely an exhib it to see more than once and to see vrith other people so you an talk about it. How do you do a ‘Very best of’ and not include “Jesse,” or “I 'Ibid Jesus?” Yes, these appear on other collections, but this says ‘Very best.” 'That aside, there’s plenty of good Flack included on this CD. Rhino does have a way of pulling together collections. “Killing Me Softly,” “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” and “Where Is The Love (with Donny Hathaway) are expect-- ed and included. These are the songs that estabhshed Flack as one of the premier ■vocalists of last century There are some unexpected, .but pleasant surprises.
