New hunger crisis
threatens African kids

The United. Nations warned on Tuesday that
hundreds of thousands of people living in the
impoverished Sahel region of West Africa could
face another hunger crisis this year if action is
not taken immediately
The UN is seeking $92 million to fend off
starvation that could effect some five million
people in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and
Mauritania..
‘This year, malnutrition will be the cause of
death for more than 300,000 children in the
Sahel if the necessary measures are not taken
in time We know what must be done, but we
need the resources to do so immediately” said
Theophane Nikyema, the deputy director of
the UN Children’s Fund (UMCEF) regional
office.
The fimds would primarily be used to feed
people coping vrith severe food shortages. In
addition, the money would help local food
banks, nutritional centers, and also provide
long-term solutions to deal with hur^r.
‘We must have long-term solutions,” said
Christine Van Nieuwenhuyse, the deputy
director of the World Food Program’s regional
office. “Children who are malnourished carry
the consequence for years and malnutrition
feeds poverty which in turn feeds malnutri
tion.”
Last year Niger faced a massive food crisis as
a resiilt of poor harvests that led to skyrocket
ing food prices. This was compounded by a
deadly locust invasion.
This year many families are stUl payir^ off
debt fiom last years crisis, and are preparing
for a trying lean season that runs from April to
October.
Currently one in three people in Niger do not
have enough to eat and failure by the interna
tional community to react could cause that fig
ure to double.

International Scholars
Conference today through
Saturday
The mission of the lAAR,
also known as the Center for
the Study of Black Life, is to
promote scholarly investiga
tion of the history and culture
of people throughout the
African Diaspora. The confer
ence is the eighth organized
by the lAAR. The Center for
tire Study of the American
South is also a sponsor.

include Roy Nobles fixan the
University of San Diego Law
School and Melissa Nobles
from the Massachusetts
Institute of Tfechnology
Dr. Winiam “Sandy” Darity
director of the LAAR, said the
conference, titled
“Reparations Across the
Americas,” will raise the
question of what should be
the compensation not only for
slavery but also for segrega
tion and hate crimes.

released the report last
December.
In 1898, Wilmington, in
eastern North Carolina
where the Cape Fear enters
into the Atlantic Ocean, was
a prosperous port town with
many black homeowners
involved in education, busi
ness and politics. According
to historical records, a coali
tion of white populists and
black Republicans defeated
Democrats in the 1896 elec
tions, and were poised to
maintain control in the 1898
election season. The
Democratic Party, which
wanted to regain control and
resented the black political
power, initiated an inflamma
tory campaign which perpet
uated stereotypes of black
men being a threat to white
women.
A white newspaper pub
lished an inflammatory
speech by Rebecca Felton, a
Georgia feminist, that said:
“If it requires lynching to pro
tect woman’s dearest posses
sion fiom ravening, drunken
human beasts, then I say
lynch a Ihousand Negroes a
week if it is necessary”
A black newspaper editor,
Alex Manly, refuted the
claims, saying the ‘lynchirgs
for rapes” were only a guise to
mask the discovery of consen
sual sexual interracial rela
tions.
