Amid the almost daily bar rage of media headlines about the dearth of black men in higher education there are some bright spots. Two key studies in July show more and more Afiican- American males are attend ing and graduating fiom col lege. Increasingly many of them are choosing one of America’s historically black colleges and universities, or HBCUs. Morehouse is one of the nation’s top degree produdi^ institutions for Afiican- American males. This year the college graduated its largest class ever - more than 600 graduates compared to l^s than 500 a year earlier. A new report from the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education states that in 2004, the latest year for which complete data is avail able, there were 758,400 black males enrolled in hi^- er education compared to 603,032 in 2000. This is the highest level of enrollments for African American males in hi^ry Black males made 4.4 percent of all enrollments in higher education. The repoi^ notes that about 28 percent of foreign-bom black men in the U.S. have a four- year degree, which is close to figures for native-born white men in. Walter E. Massey, Morehouse’s president, says: “At Morehoirse developing young men is our only busi ness. We build an expectation of success: lawyers, the physi cians, the bias drivers and computer technicians - if not — wewillallpay1heprice,’’he said, citing author James Baldwin’s 1970s call for radi cal chaise: “These are our cliiidren and we will benefit by or pay for what they Clianeston House on Tke plaza A Low Country Restaurant Lunch 11:30 a.m. ■ 3:00 p.m. Dinner. 5:00 p.m. ■ 11:00 p.m. 3128 The Plaza Charlotte, NC 28205 704-333-4441 Lots of ^oocl food and Leverages!
