Army names first black
commandant at chaplain school
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
FORT JACKSON, S.C. -
The new commandant at the
Army’s school for chaplains,
whose father served in a seg
regated Army, says his selec
tion as the first black to lead
the 88-year-old military insti
tution is a reflection of Ameri
ca’s diversity
“This has some significance,
so it’s pretty cool,” said Chap
lain Col. Clarke McGiiff, 51.
Looking at photos and
mementoes of his 25-year
career, McGriff said he hopes
to use his position at the U.S.
Army Chaplain Center and
School to make a difference in
the lives of soldiers and their
families.
“This is a tremendous insti
tution,” McGriff said in an
intemew.
He said he draws inspira
tion finm the school’s stu
dents, who have volxmteered
to become chaplains —at a
time when many know they
are headir^ into combat.
“I guarantee you, a good
number of them will be in
Iraq or Afghanistan before
December. That’s the reahty
of the time. They know that
and they still come,” McGriff
said.
The school, with its staff of
30 dvihans and 73 teachra^
and administrators in rmi-
form, trains chaplains who
are ordained dvilian deigy
and seminarians to serve in
the Army It also conducts
basic and advanced officer
training for active duty and
Army Reserve chaplains.
Enlisted soldiers and non
commissioned officers may
att«id the school to become
chaplain assistants.
Paul fulfills his destiny to lead

and powerful way
Supernatural '\dsion (2 Cor.
12:1-6)
1. How does the presence of
false teachers provide the
backgroimd for Paul’s
thoughts?
When we come to the last
four chapters of 2 Corinthi
ans, it becomes apparent that
Paul was defending himself
against certain detractors.
Paul condemned the motives
of these false teachers and
rebuked the church for being
led astray by them. In Chap
ter 12, Paul states that he
could boast to a much greater
degree than the false teach
ers. Of course, Paul was not
an arrogant person, but Paul’s
opponents wanted him to
speak of thit^ that could be
grounds for boasting.
Paul considered tiiese false
teachers to be ‘Talse apostles,
deceitful workers, transform
ing themselves into the apos
tles of Christ” (2 Cor. 11:13).
In fact, they were preaching
“another Jesus” (y 4), which
put them under a divine curse
(Gal. 1:6-9).
2. Who did Paul mean when
he spoke of “a man in Christ”
(2 Cor. 12:2)?
Evidently when Paid
referred to “a man in Christ,”
he was referring to himself
Since he referred to himself
indirectly in his vision, Paul
showed that he regarded this
experience not as a conse- tion of* what aU believers will
quence of his worthiness, but experience when they enter
because he was “in Christ.” the presence of Christ in
Paul’s vision is an antidpa- heaven.
