Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. asking the IRS to respond to a complaint about the NAACP ham political donor Richard Hug. Ehrlich is now govOTior of Marjiand- The documents also includ ed letters calling for an inves tigation of the NAACP fi.X)m Sens. Lamar Alexander (R- Tfenn.) and Susan Collins (R- Maine); then-Sen. U.S, Reps, JoAnn Davis (R-Va.) and Larry Combest (R- Tfexas), Marcus S, Owens, an attor ney with the Washington, D-C., firm Caplin & Drysdale, and the NAACP’s representa tive during the audit, said he’s still perplexed about the IRS’s rationale for the audit and the investigation’s tim ing. T find it extremely xmusu- al, the circumstances \mder which the audit was begun — the timing of it, the nature of the allegations,” said Owens, who led the IRS’s exempt organizations division for 10 years. While conservative organi zations such as the Heritage Foimdation and the American Enterprise Institute were "pumping out press releases” in support of the president’s policies dur ing the 2004 election season, Owens said, the NAACP was singed out for an audit. ‘It just leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth,” Owens said.
