State University The scholarships are given in honor of four educators fiom the former Tbrrence-Lytle High School: Isaac Graham, Esther Johnson, Francis Jones and Leroy Wynn. • Alexis Avery has been named compliance cooixiinator at Johnson C. Smith University Avery who will also serve as assistant volleyball coach, was administrative assistant at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association office in Hampton, Va. • Morayo Orija has been named program director of Arts & Science Council South, a regional office of cultural devel opment in Matthews, ^hnt HiU and PinevUle. Orija came to ASC fiom Stageworks Theatre in Charlotte, where she was a teaching artist and company manager. • Michele Wilcox has joined Prudential Carolinas Realty as a sales assod- ate. WUcox worked in sales for Limited Brands in North Carolina and Pennsylvania before joining Prudential. A Avery Wilcox native of HoUywood, Fla., she is a 1998 graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., and earned a law degree from the University of Miami She works from Prudential’s SouthPark office. Orija MLK’s sister urges activism rH£ ASSOCIATED PRESS FLORENCE, S.C. Christine King Farris, the eldest sister of the late Rev. Martin Luther Kir^ Jr., told churchgoers here that racism stall exists and encouraged the audience to continue her brother’s nonviolent strug^e. Farris described her broth er, assassinated in 1968, as an ordinary boy growing up, who felt the sting of racism and vowed to "stand this world on its head.” “He wanted to win freedom without violence, not threats, but with love, unconditional love for aU people,” she said Sxmday at TVinity Baptist Church during its Women’s Day Observance. Farris, author of “My Brother Martin,” is director of the Learning Resources Center at Spelman CoUege, a histor ically black coUege for women in Atlanta. She said peace can’t exist without justice, and that free dom-loving people should not tolerate poverty, racism and militarism. There wUl be no world peace until those evUs are eliminated, Farris said. “One of the dearest lessons of history is that peace and justice ace tied together,” she said. “And jixstice in its tniest sonse can never be achieved through violence.” Fanis said blacks must strive to keep thefr right?
