7B RELIGIO We Clarlotte $o«t Thursday, October 5, 2006 Excommunicated African bishop says aOowing married priests would make Catholicism a healthier institution THE ASSOC/ATED PRESS WASHINGTON-An excommunicated African bishop criticized the Vati can’s stance on mandator^’ celibacy for priests and said allowing them to marry would make the Roman Catholic Church a healthier institution. “The current priest short age calls for emergency action,” said Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo of Zam bia. On Tuesday, the Vatican announced MUingo’s expiil- sion from the church because he presided over the tmauthorized ordina tion of four married men as bishops Sunday during cer emonies at a Washington, D.C., chinch. Speaking in both Italian and English at a news con ference Wednesday, Milingo said the Catholic Church should embrace more than 150,000 married priests worldwide, in part to ease the ongoing clergy shortage and to elevate the sanctity of marriage. “I believe that the Catholic Church as a moth er cannot be indifferent to the situation of married priests who have much suf fering and are abandoned,” said Milingo, a 76-year-old Zambian prelate whose relationship with the Vati can has been strained for years. In 2001, he was married to a South Korean acupunc turist chosen for him by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon of the Unification Church, in a group wedding ceremony in New York. Catholic officials also have accused MUingo of promot ing African indigenous beliefs by performing mass exorcisms and healing cere monies. Milingo pointed to sexual abuse allegations against celibate priests in the Unit ed States as an indication “that something is wrong.” He was joined Wednesday by the four bishops he ordained Simday. They also have been excommunicated. “We are well aware of the sexual misconduct within the Church. We believe that marriage is a way to heal the Church and to make it whole,” said Rev. George Augustus Stallings, Jr, a former priest in the Arch diocese of Washington, who left the Roman Catholic Church in 1989 to foimd the Afiican American Catholic Congregation. “Coiiscience demands that this seriously unjust law of celibacy be broken,” said Rev. Patrick E. Trujillo, who is affiliated with the Old Roman Catholic Church in Newark, New Jersey. The men support Milin- go’s so-called • “Married Priests Now” association, which is calling for a mar ried priesthood to become a normal part of the Catholic Church- They note that dozens of married priests who formerly were Luther an and Anglican have served as Roman Catholic priests over the past 30 years and some clergy in the Eastern Rites of the Roman Catholic Church are also married. Milingo told reporters that since Sunday he has heard from supporters in India, Portugal and Cana da. He also said he will not recognize his excom.munica- tion and will continue cele brating Mass and holding faith healing ceremonies. Although Vatican authori ties, including the late Pope John Paul II, had tried for years to coax Milingo into mending his ways, Rome lost patience with him over the imauthorized ordina tions, which threaten papal authority. The Vatican issued a statement Tuesday indicat ing that Milingo and the four men effectively excom- mimicated themselves by participating in an ordina tion rite not authorized by the Vatican in violation of Chiuch law. Little, Teacher Listen, friends. The Word of God is true, whether you believe it or not. God told us about Heaven in His infallible Word. And He told us about Hell. There is no such thing as believing one part of the Word and denying the other. You can’t take Heaven and leave out Hell. When you deny the reality of Hell, you are calling God a liar! Every time you speak to a friend, you are calling God a liar if you are not in Christ. Are you in Christ? Being in the church is not being in Christ. The devils go to church. You talk some about your church. But you will not talk to me about Christ, the Sacrifice. It is because you do not know Him. For 34 years I've been giving my testimony about how God saved this sinner who was as religious as they come. God awakened me to my lost condition and showed me that I was totally depraved, hell-bom, hell-bent, hell-hound and hell-deserving. But oh, the love of God that brought me broken at the Feet of Christ crying: lord, save me or I perishl” .And it was there, Kenneth, when He broke my stubborn and cussed will, with all hope gone, helpless, doomed and damned. He REVEALED Christ to my heart as my Lord and my Saviour. Not this tommyrot of I accepted Jesus. No, just the quiet revelation of Christ to my heart as my Lord and my Saviour. And that is what I want for sinners all over. For you to be able to say: “Christ died tor me”.
