7B RELIGfON/{E|e C|arIoRe Thursday, October 12, 2006 New Friendship Trays branch marks anniversary By Chens F. Hodges cfiens.hodgesS'/fiechariotfeposf.com Friendship Trays is cele brating 30 years of feeding , the needy On October 4, 1976, a handful of volunteers deliv ered six meals to elderly residents in the Charlotte’s Elizabeth neighborhood, according to the organiza tion’s web site. That first Friendship Trays delivery as the result of five church es recognizing that there was an emerging need in the community. By 1993, over 700 volun teers - largely fi-om church es and businesses - were driving more than 40 routes with six stops each, and there were still more people who needed help. lb serve them. Friendship Tta}^ would need to be able to • prepare additional meals, and there was not enough room at St. Mar tin’s Episcopal Church. As organization leaders con sidered options for expan sion, the answer came in the form of 5,000 square feet of donated warehouse space. Volimteers launched a capital campaign to secure the funding and in 1996, the new Friendship Trays Kitchen opened. Ibday, the need is stiU there and, according to Lucy Bush Carter, execu tive director of Friendship Trays, the group is estab lishing another satellite office at Friendship Mis sionary Baptist Church on Beatties Ford Road. “We are opening it in early 2007,” she said. “Members of the church already deliver meals for us and they invited us to estabhsh a satellite there.” Carter said that there are 23 routes near the church that volunteers travel weekdays. That translates into about 180 meals deliv ered. Volunteers from the Beat- ties Ford Road area drive to the Friendship Trays office on Distribution Drive. Carter said the iiew satel lite office will make things more convenient. And volunteers are always needed. Carter said. “We have an infinite need for volimteers,” she said. Historic church faces possible closure ait celebrates 164 years THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW ORLEANS-Mem- bers of one of the nation’s old est historically black Catholic churches will gather this weekend to commemorate its foimding in the days befisre the Civil War. They hope to have more such cdebrations in the years to come, but the fate of St. Augustine Catholic Church these days is as uncertain as some parts of this storm- wracked city In March, the Archdiocese of New Orleans annovmced plans to close the church because of declining member ship, thou^ St. Augustine has since received an 18- month reprieve. The church sustained roof and bell tower dam^e when Katrina struck in August 2005, but the sanctuary was spared floodir^. Since the storm, St. Augustine has been a source of comfort and peage for parishioners hke Sandra Gordon and others who lost so much. “Our life has been shattered to beyond what anyone can believe. The one stable thing in our lives is our chiirch,” said Gordon, a member of St. Augustine for almost all of her 52 years and the church- parish council president. For months after Katrina, Gordon would pull into the driveway of her flooded New Orleans home and, heartsick, turn her car around and head to St. Augustine. As the parish planned to kick off a weekend-long com memoration Friday of its 164th anniversary, Gordon said she couldn’t wait to cele brate despite concerns over the church’s fate. St. Augustine was foimded by whites and fiee people of color in 1841, then consecrat ed and dedicated on Oct. 9, 1842. Around ffiat time, fi:ee black members of the congre gation bought pews in Ihe church so more and more family members and slaves could attend Mass. Protests erupted over the announced closing this spring, and the archdiocese eventually relented and gave the parish an 18-month grace period to rebuild its congrega tion, reinstate spiritual edu cation programs and get its budget in order to avoid clo sure. The parish has been work ing to meet those goals — recruiting members firom flood-damaged and shutt«:ed chvirches and reaching out to residents who have not yet returned. “We’re going ahead with our plans to rebuild,” said Linda Santi, a spokeswoman for St. Augustine. Still, membership fluctu ates and findir^ a priest to officiate at Sunday Mass is a weekly struggle, Santi. said. Santi said she hopes this weekend’s anniversary cele bration win boost member ship and raise money and awareness. The celebration was to begin Friday night with a benefit party featurii^ local musicians Jason Berry Germaine Bazzle and Char- maine Neville, among others. The Word of God is true, whether you believe it or not. God told us about Heaven in His infallible Word. And He told us about Hell. There is no such thing as believing one part of the Word and denying the other. You can't take Heaven and leave out Hell. When you deny the reality of Hell, you are calling God a liarl Every time you speak to a friend, you are calling God a liar if you are not in Christ. Are you in Christ? Being in the church is not being in Christ. The devils go to church. You talk some about your church. But you will hot talk to me about Christ, the Sacrifice. It is because you do not know Him. For 34 years I've been giving my testimony about how God saved this sinner who was as religious as they come. God awakened me to my lost condition and showed me that I was totally depraved, hell-bom, hell-bent, hell-bound and hell-deserving. But oh, the love of God that brought me broken at the Feet of Christ crying: lord, save me or I perishi” And it was there, Kenneth, when He broke my stubborn and cussed will, with all hope gone, helpless, doomed and damned. He REVEALED Christ to my heart as my Lord and my Saviour. Not this tommyrot of I accepted Jesus. No, just the quiet revelation of Christ to my heart as my Lord and my Saviour. And that is what I want for sinners all over. For you to be able to say: “Christ died for me’. “Helping persons to realize Cod’s creative intent for his or her life as designed by Cod’s Word in the areas of evangelism, worship, discipleship, ministry and fellowship.” Antioch Missionary Baptist Church 232 Skyland Ave. • Charlotte, NC 28205 704-332-4951 • Website: www.antiochfamily.org Rev.
