The Chowan spirit of 1848
still lives.
The following letter has just
been received by Miss Eunice
McDowell:
“I am sending you in this let
ter my check for $1000.00 made
payable to you for the benefit of
Chowan College in memory of
my mother. I feel that you will
most likely get all that is needed
to rehabilitate your library and
if that is true, I would like to
see this thousand dollars put in
trust for the benefit of the li-
brary fund and the income from
it to be used from time to time
as required to help buy new
books that are needed. Howev
er, this is only a suggestion to
you. If you have some better
plan, it will be entirely satisfact
ory to me.
Yours sincerely,

ART DEPARTMENT TO PUT ON
UNIQUE CONTEST
Under the efficient supervision of
Miss Dai.sy Grubb, the Art Depart
ment of Chowan College is fast gain
ing recognition throughout eastern
Carolina.
A systematic course, which ha* not
heretofore been strictly followed, is
being planned leading to graduation.
This course includes Applied Design
ing, History of Lettering, Study of
Textiles, and a study which can be
applied by all girls in “House Beauti
ful.” The art students are putting
aside old methods and are working
directly from nature and life.
Your attention is directed to a new
feature in the “Chowanian” done by
the art students through the instru
mentality of pen and ink illustrations.
This new method is easily portrayed
in these cartoons.
The department is now launching a
most interesting and enthusiastic con
test which will greatly advertise this
part of Chowan’s work. Those who
are eligible for entrance in this con
est are the high school girls of the
West Chowan Association. Attrac
tive pries are being offered for the
best piece of work presented. The
first prize will be free instruction in
art for one semester. The second
prize will be a handmade design neck
lace made in the applied design de
partment. The third prize is a
sketch by the instructor herself.
