The following letter has just been received by Miss Eunice McDowell: “I am sending you in this let ter my check for $1000.00 made payable to you for the benefit of Chowan College in memory of my mother. I feel that you will most likely get all that is needed to rehabilitate your library and if that is true, I would like to see this thousand dollars put in trust for the benefit of the li- brary fund and the income from it to be used from time to time as required to help buy new books that are needed. Howev er, this is only a suggestion to you. If you have some better plan, it will be entirely satisfact ory to me. Yours sincerely, H. D. SHEPPARD. ART DEPARTMENT TO PUT ON UNIQUE CONTEST Under the efficient supervision of Miss Dai.sy Grubb, the Art Depart ment of Chowan College is fast gain ing recognition throughout eastern Carolina. A systematic course, which ha* not heretofore been strictly followed, is being planned leading to graduation. This course includes Applied Design ing, History of Lettering, Study of Textiles, and a study which can be applied by all girls in “House Beauti ful.” The art students are putting aside old methods and are working directly from nature and life. Your attention is directed to a new feature in the “Chowanian” done by the art students through the instru mentality of pen and ink illustrations. This new method is easily portrayed in these cartoons. The department is now launching a most interesting and enthusiastic con test which will greatly advertise this part of Chowan’s work. Those who are eligible for entrance in this con est are the high school girls of the West Chowan Association. Attrac tive pries are being offered for the best piece of work presented. The first prize will be free instruction in art for one semester. The second prize will be a handmade design neck lace made in the applied design de partment.
