MISS ROBINSON AHENDS
ASSOCIATION’S MEETING
Deans of Women in North Car
olina Colleges Have Inter
esting Session
Miss Robinson, the dean of women
at Chowan, gave in an enthusiastic
talk to the student body in chapel on
the morning of her return from the
State Association of Deans of Wom
en, which met in Greensboro on Nov
ember 20-21, a little of what she
had heard and done while there. The
State Association of Deans is an or
ganization vvhich v»rill bring in closer
touch the deans of the various col
leges in the State. This organiza
tion is an attempt to standardize the
position of de,an of women by putting
it on a professional basis, so that
certain things will be required of a
person holding that office.
On Tuesday, November 20, the as
sociation was entertained at the
Alumnae Leo House of North Caro
lina College at luncheon where Mrs.
M. L. Stacey, Dean of University of
North Carolina gave an excellent talk
on, “The Purpose and Need of State
Organization of Deans”. In the
evening the assembly took dinner at
Greensboro College. A speech writ
ten by the President J. I. Foust of N.
C. C. W. was read after the dinner.
His subject was, “What a College
President Expects of a Dean of
Women”. He said that the success
of the dean in the college is due to
the fact of the splendid organiza
tion, Student Government. The dean
should have a broader sympathy with
the girls in their troubles and be de
void of any suspicion. To guide the
spirit in the right channels is better
than to repress it. “Challenge the
girls to be the best and appeal to the
highest things of life in that way de
serve the ideal of the best” was his
plea to the deans.
Miss Morgan of St. Mary’s spoke on
“Qualifications of a Dean of Wom
en”. In her talk she enumerated
many qualities that a dean should
have: the inborn qualities such as
self-control, distaste for familiarities,
a sense of humor, and a love for all
girls; the acquired qualities, an edu
cation, a desire to keep up with new
(ideas and social graces. Besides
these qualifications she should hold at
least an A. B. degree.
Wednesday morning many helpful
talks were made. A very interest
ing one was given by Miss Jay Taylor
of N. C. C. W. on “The Contents and
Nature of Talks to Freshmen”. She
gave every suggestion that would
make every Freshmen in college, ac
cording to Miss Robinson’s report of
it, a happy, charming person with a
systematic course of work and play
to live by.
“How an Adviser May Help a
Freshman Make an Early Adjustment
to College” was solved by Miss Nettie
Ricketts of Greensboro College. She
suggested as one of her plans the
“Big Sister Plan” that has been used
with success in some colleges. There
were many other helpful discussions
on difficult problems that come up in
college life.
Miss Robinson aaid in her talk, with
enthusiasm, “If I should try to tell
you all of the things that I learned
and that would help you in your dif
ficulties I would talk a month. I
wish, however, to impart slowly but
surely all that I have gained from the
splendid discussion at the Associa
tion. I hope the girls will feel thjat
I am personally interested in each
girl’s welfare. My desire is to build
up here a loyal student body that can
be called on at any time!”
Miss Robinson is an efficient dean
of women, having the qualities that
enable her to guide the girls in the
right things. The Student Govern
ment has met all requirements so far
this year, yet she still strives to
make the organization more ideal in
every respect.
