Prominent Alumna Writes Fine Letter Mrs. Horne Commends Efforts To Make Chowan “Best Small College” My Dear Dr. Weaver: I wish to offer you and your asso ciates our heartiest congratulations. Your challenge to make “Chowan the best small woman’s college in the world” is one to become historic along with Daniel Webster’s defense of his Alma Mater in the famous Dartmouth College Case: “She is, as you have said. Sir, a small college; but—there are those that love her.” And to say from first hand knowledge I believe I may safely affirm that the Dartmouth Spirit literally encircles the globe in constructive educational endeavor, just as, right in this place, I have claimed for Chowan—estab lished four years before Vassar—the priority in both home and foreign missionary work. I wish it may be known that the Julia Wheeler voice medal will be, I hope, more beautiful this year than ever before—to encourage Sunday singing. Would you kindly take care of en closed subscription to the Chowan- ian? The Seventy-fifth Anniversary idea stirred my enthusiasm to one hundred and five degrees. I am soon sending to your library a dozen books that havfijielped me, in honor of my dear 'lother’s birthday—November 28. May I remind you of two alumnae viz: A “famous woman” of Chowan was my husband’s grandmother, Ann Judson Battle, daughter of the great pioneer educational Baptist mission- iary. Rev. Amos Battle and wife of Rev. V. J. Harrell a sainted Baptist minister and well known as a poet, and honored as the author of “Ho! For Carolina”? The second was Ann Ward, Chowan first graduate who married State Historian, John Wheeler Moore, a near kinsman of my mother’s. She was the sole mem ber of the Class of ’61 and the for tunes of war rendered sheepskin then unobtainable. However, her diploma was conferred five years later on her ' “proxy”—her five year old son, who braved (?) the ordeal of a stage ap- I pearance for her. Thanking you and with every good wi'h, I am Very truly yours, (Signed) BESSIE WORTHINGTON HORNE. (Mrs. H. H. Horne) Jessie Marie reported on history class that the Mediterranean was a flower.
