Amateur Night A Howling Success «r Five Prizes Were Awarded, Followed By Well-Staged Minstrel Show Amateur Night as introduced into the college activities on Friday, Nov ember 23, was received with enthu siasm and applause. The students of the college responded to the challenge for amateurs productions with origi nal and clever performances. The evening throughout was characterized by unusual success. Plans are being made to present certain of the num bers in surrounding towns at an early date. The Senior-Junior dramatization of “The House That Jack Built” won the twenty-five dollar prize. The absurd ly grotesque representations of the rat, the cat, the dog, and the cow that dwelt in the famous house set the spectators howling with laughter. The second-prize was awarded Mrs. Lloyd Lawrence, a special student in the music department. Mrs. Law rence sang beautifully “My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice” from the opera Samson and Delilah by Saint Saens. The other successful contestants were; Miss Emily Sessoms, third; Miss Jewel Askew, fourth; Misses Ila Leary and Ethleen Vick, fifth. Because Amateur Night met with such instant response, and apprecia tion from everyone, the students have decided to make it an annual institu tion of the college. It will furnish a splendid opportunity for the discov ery and development of talent among the students. The amateur performances were followed immediately by a negro minstrel under the direction of Miss Mary Nelly Holt. The many jokes, local hits, and humorous songs kept the audience in a roar of laughter. The first scene was a group of colonial men and women in fancy costumes. Miss Elsie Gordon as in terlocutor directed the singing of many medleys and songs of planta tion days interspersed with jokes and wit from the end men. In the second division of the min strel Miss Lilly White became the blushing bride of Coal Black. The proceeds of the minstrel went to the B. Y. P. U. fund.
