ketbail s;ason should go over the
fcp. Everyone on the campus
. hates to see basketball season
over, but spring brings the ever-
loving baseball al^ng with tennis
and other outdoor sports.
Baseball w'ili b'e the only inter-
: collegiate spring saort in which
Chowan will ccmpste this year.
Tennis will be taught in physical-
education classes, but there will
be no team u'htil later years.
Coach Layton, being a littlr.
more pleased with basketball
than earlief this season, is mak-
'ing plans for a baseball season
that will be th: first in the his-
tciry of Chowan College. Tlie
1950 Chcwan -• Braves' Basketball
Team will make history whether
all. the gami’S are won or not.
Just as with football and basket
ball, the baseball .team will be
coati>osed of boys w'ho have never
played togi'ther. Everyone is
gradually forgetting basketball
and talking baseball.
The equipment has arrived and
Coach Layton is busy schedul
ing games for his beginning bas:'-
ball team. It is already a com
mon sight to see boys out on the
ca/.npus throwing ball to loosen
their muscles. A nie£ting will soon
be called by Coach Layton to see
who is interested in playing this
season.
Judging from campus talk, one
finds that everyone seems to
think that baseball will be very
successful here at Chowan.
Among the prospects for base
ball this year probably the most
outstanding and talked about is
Cwl Taylor of Seaboaixi, North
Carolina. He has much pitching
experience and will prove a
credit to Chowan first basiball
team. Taylor pitched for Oak
Ridge Militay Institute last year.

playing on the court this season
also. During this seacn, Billy has
scored a total of 127 points In

Everyone watched this boy and
his spectacular playing. He wore
Jersey number 17 and made it
very populai'.
During football 5‘ason, Billy
was the boy who^ seen run
ning in between offensive and
defensive plays. He play.’d a very
gwJd defensive halfback and
played wing-back on offense.
Ev'eryon? hopes and expects to

The Goober Belt is having its
tournament In the Auland;r gym.
Some of the bfest basketball play
ers in the state are exipected to
play in this tournament. There's
especially a lot of competition
between the top three teams,
Williamstch, Woodland, and Con-
w^ay. Anyone wanting to see the
games better go early so as to
obtain a seat.
Tourna;.iicnt winners for this
section are really going places.
For example the Ahoskie boys
have won the first district cham
pionship. These gamis were
played at Farmville, but the next
playgXfs between Alioskie and the
winner cf th: second district was
played elsewhere.

Naturally, the girls want to
hav." a scftball team. They could
play soRie of the high school
teams just fcr exercise and fun.
A sport like this helps to adver-
tiz'e the colleg; to the girls in
high .schools as well as the way
boys' athletics do. Perhaps some
arrangements can be made to
hav; a girls’ team. 'We do have
some sli'.ggers around this 'place.

Columbia Blue
Coiun:.bia bUn has beccme the
favorite color of many Chowan
lovers. It has been considered the
school color ever since the first
of th: football season. The foot
ball uniforms were this color and
were admired by everyone. Chesr-
lead :-'s uniforms also have been
very colorful at every ath'e'.ic
event. Wiiethcir at home or visit
ing, the Chcwan followers have
cherished the deal old clcimvbisi
blue on the athletic field or court.
Speaking of a com't—the basket
ball sported out on the court this
year with white satin unifoims
trimmed in Columbia blue.
The alma m.'ter and Columbia
blue s;em to go hand in hand
around the Chcwan campus and
amcng Chowan students every
where.
Several sr.nples of Columbia
blue s v-aters with white C's have
been leceived. It is the goal of
the Department of Athletics to
get or.; of these "A'eaters for c?.ch
Chowc.n athletic participant.
aJUimt'.a bMie pennants and
pennant stickers have been iold
by the college soda shop and are
still on sale. Suitcases and note
books with Columbia blue pen

of the campus.
