It is dedicated this year to Dean of Instruction Robert H. Woodland, the annual adviser, who is taking a leave of absence next year to get his Ph. D. de gree. The editor was Peggy Wiggins of Murfreesboro and the business manager, Eugene Herring of Suffolk, Va. The Rev. W. D. Morris of the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck delivered the baccalaureate address at Chowan College Sun day afternoon, pointing out three “guideposts” for students to fol low during life. Comparing human experience to an automobile moving along a highway, Mr. Morris called on the students to use three guideposts as an autoist uses such signs in his travel. The Bible, the church, and “inner conscience” were the j guideposts that would “equip you j to meet the trials and problems I of a new day,” Mr. Morris told I the graduates. j Chowan College President F j Orion Mixon introduced the Rev. ! Mr. Morris. The invocation was ' said by the Rev. Oscar Creech, associate to the president. The Rev. Warren F. Taylor of the Mur freesboro Baptist Church led in the Scripture reading and prayer, and the benediction was pro nounced by the Rev. Lonnie Sasser of Conway and Mt Tabor Baptist churches. The Chowan Glee Club under the direction of Mrs. Rose Goodwin Pool, sang two selections. Describing the worth of the three guideposts, Mr. Morris as serted that the Bible contains “eternal truth,” despite its age, and admonished the graduates to “have faith in, faith for, and live by” the Bible. He said the church, despite charges of “conservatism” and “old, outmoded” teachings, was still “the greatest institution for building the Kingdom of God and a civilization that will last.” Mr. Morris called on the grad uates to “exercise that inner con science that is ever with you,” especially in the “turbulent hours of today.” In his conclusion, Mr. Morris quoted the poem “Columbus,” and challenged the graduates to “sail on” along “life’s highway and on life’s seas” with the help and aid of the Bible, church and inner conscience. Commencement exercises will be in 'the college auditorium Fri day beginning at 10:30 a. m. The address will be by Dr. Spright Dowell, president of Mercer University, Macon, Ga. Dr. F. O. Mixon will present associate of arts degrees to 11 members of the two-year graduat ing class and certificates in busi ness administration to 27 mem bers of the one-year graduating class. “Pomp and Circumstance” by Elgar will be the processional to be played by Miss Virginia Mc Queen. The Rev. Mr. Creech will ask the invocation. The glee club under the direc tion of Mrs. Rosa Goodwin Pool will sing “A Song in Thy Praise,” by McCullers and “Hallelujah Chorus” from “The Messiah” by Handel. Dr. Mixon will introduce the speaker. Mrs. J. S. Penny of Raleigh will make further announcement on the special organ fund. The singing of the Alma Mater and the recessional played by Miss McQueen will bring the com mencement to a close. Members Attend Council Seven members of the Chowan College B. S. U. attended the North Carolina Baptist Officers Conference in Albemarle on April 24, 25 and 26. The theme of the convention was “We Walk by Faith.” The program included ad dresses by Dr. Stewart Newman and Miss Elizabeth Kennedy, pan els and discussion groups, clinic workshops for officers, special music and social periods. New state officers were elected for the coming year. The installa tion service was held at the wor ship service Sunday morning.
