ANNUAL OFFICERS—The Annual, The Chowancka, has just
arrived and been distributed to students. It is dedicated this year
to Dean of Instruction Robert H. Woodland, the annual adviser,
who is taking a leave of absence next year to get his Ph. D. de
gree. The editor was Peggy Wiggins of Murfreesboro and the
business manager, Eugene Herring of Suffolk, Va.
The Rev. W. D. Morris of the
First Baptist Church of Scotland
Neck delivered the baccalaureate
address at Chowan College Sun
day afternoon, pointing out three
“guideposts” for students to fol
low during life.
Comparing human experience to
an automobile moving along a
highway, Mr. Morris called on the
students to use three guideposts
as an autoist uses such signs in
his travel. The Bible, the church,
and “inner conscience” were the
j guideposts that would “equip you
j to meet the trials and problems
I of a new day,” Mr. Morris told
I the graduates.
j Chowan College President F
j Orion Mixon introduced the Rev.
! Mr. Morris. The invocation was
' said by the Rev. Oscar Creech,
associate to the president. The
Rev. Warren F. Taylor of the Mur
freesboro Baptist Church led in
the Scripture reading and prayer,
and the benediction was pro
nounced by the Rev. Lonnie Sasser
of Conway and Mt Tabor Baptist
churches. The Chowan Glee Club
under the direction of Mrs. Rose
Goodwin Pool, sang two selections.
Describing the worth of the
three guideposts, Mr. Morris as
serted that the Bible contains
“eternal truth,” despite its age,
and admonished the graduates to
“have faith in, faith for, and live
by” the Bible.
He said the church, despite
charges of “conservatism” and
“old, outmoded” teachings, was
still “the greatest institution for
building the Kingdom of God and
a civilization that will last.”
Mr. Morris called on the grad
uates to “exercise that inner con
science that is ever with you,”
especially in the “turbulent hours
of today.”
In his conclusion, Mr. Morris
quoted the poem “Columbus,” and
challenged the graduates to “sail
on” along “life’s highway and on
life’s seas” with the help and aid
of the Bible, church and inner
conscience.
Commencement exercises will
