Th° Braves are introducing 18 Freshmen along with a new coach, Gig Lloyd, who has hieh hopes for his freshman-studded tepm. Chowan has only four return ing leftermen from the dismal 57 season, which saw the braves win only seven games. If theh Bravees are as good on field as they are on paper there isn’t any reason why Chowan shouldn’t have their finest team in several seasons. As a whole the team has a batting average of 338, while the pitching staff has a fine record of 46 wins and 10 defeats in last years compe tition. The following are the boys who made the team and what each did in their last active sea son before coming to Chowan. Bob Darden: pitcher, a gradu ate of Broadway H. S. Bob comes to Chowan after pulling two years in the service. Darden played mostly softball in the service, but in his last baseball season he had a respectable 7-1 record. He slands 5’U” and is a right-hander all the way. In high scnool Bob plaved four years of varsity baseball and had a pret ty fair season with the stick in his senior year as he hit 325. Carroll Hawkins, 6’2” right- handed Ditcher from Aycock High School. Last season Haw kins posted a deceiving 6 and 8 record. He was a one man team at Aycock as he won all the games the team won. He lead the team in strike outs with 80 and he compiled the most com plete games. During the summer he pitched semi-pro, but did not get any decisions in the win or loss column. Murphy Smith, 6'2” 162 pounds, a right-hander who pitched for Robertsonville High School and posted a 5 and 4 record. Murphy played three seasons of varsity basebail and demonstrated his power by belting ■ three home runs. In four years of varsity ball he won 28 and lost only 2. As a hitter he proved just as talented as he hit 448 in his junior year and 338 in his last season. In his senior year he won 10, lost 2, and he struck out 116. Kenneth stands 6’3” and 182 pounds, he received his di ploma from Conway H. S. Clyde Morgan is the only reg ular pitcher back from the ’57 team. He is six feet tall and weighs one hundred and eighty pounds. Clyde was bothered with arm trouble last season and never really got going; poor backing didn’t do that flipper any good. As of late his arm seems to be feeling good and Clyde hopes to get back the form that made him a winner at Weeksville. John Hogan is a 5’8”, 160 pound switch hitting catcher from New Bern H. S.
