Chowan Takes Tourney Runner-up
Captains of Chowan Braves and EMI Five shake hands before

Chowan’s Basketball Braves
were the runners-up in the Invi
tational Tournament played at
Gardner-Webb College during
the Thanksgiving Holidays.
The Braves won their opener
Friday night, taking the favored
Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb by a
66-57 count, and moved into the
finals against a Wingate five
that downed number one seeded
North Greenville, 86-68.
Gene Page, tiny ietterman
guard, led the Bi%ves scoring
with 15 points. Veteran center
Carlton Debnam got 11, and two
rookies—Garland Caudle and
lanky John Smith—^poured in 8
each.
In Saturday night’s champion
ship clash, the Braves could
not get going in the first half,
and they left the court at inter
mission trailing 48-30. In the sec
ond half, the blue-and-white men
came to life and played their
Wingate Baptist cousins to a
standstill, but the 18-point first-
half deficit was too much and
Wingate walked off with an
83-63 championship win.
Carlton Debnam was the chief
Brave in the finale, hitting the
nets for 22 points. Letterman
Richard Murray added 11 to the
total, and veterans Norman
Phillips and Donnie Upchurch
got 8 apiece.
North Greenville captured the
consolation crown by subduing
Gardner-Webb’s stubborn Bull
dogs in a thrilling 73-72 contest.
Coach Jim Garrison was en
couraged by the way his Braves
played in their openers, with
only three weeks of practice un
der their belts prior to the
tourney. He expressed c o n f i-
dence in his squad and predicted
a highly successful season for
the team. .
The Braves began their home
season Friday night, December
5, in the Chowan gym at 8
o’clock, when they played their
first conference game against
their old rivals, the Cadets of
E.M.I. On Saturday night, Dec.
6, the Braves traveled to Rich
mond to tangle with the Baby
Spiders of Richmond University.

Spiders Take
Braves 84-50
RICHMOND, VA.—A band of
Chowan College Basketball
Braves entered the home nest of
the Baby Spiders of the Univer
sity of Richmond Saturday
night, Dec. 6, and recieved an
84-50 shellacking for their
efforts.
From the opening tap to the
final buzzer, the issue was never
in doubt. The five Richmond
freshmen were a smoothly-
operating unit. All five of the
starters whipped the nets with
uncanny accuracy, and, on de
fense, they completely stiffled
the Braves attack.
Gary Justice, the Baby Spi
ders’ ace back court man, was
their leading point-getter. Hit
ting nine from the field and six
out of eight from the line. Jus
tice put a total of 24 points on
the scoreboard for his team.
The sharp-shooting Cadets of
EMI romped to their fourth
straight conference victory Fri
day night, Dec. 5, in the Chowan
gym when they rolled over a
sluggish band of Braves by a
margin of 73-51.
Led by their veteran front
court marksman, Harvey Oxen-
dine, who hit nine field goals
for his evening’s work, the
Cadets poured it on in the first
half and were out in front 41-23
at the midway mark.
In the second half, the two
teams played on equal terms.
At one point, the Braves cut the
Cadet margin to 12 points, but
were never able to make a
serious threat in the final stanza.
Co-captain Norman Phillips
was the only Brave to hit in the
double figures. He led the scor
ing with 10 points, followed by
Richard Murray with 8.
■rhe win eave the Cadets a 4-1
record for the season, their only
loss coming at the hands of
Portsmouth’s new Frederic Col
lege, a non-conference opponent.
The loss left the Braves with a
record of one
starts.

games this season and most of
them are during the week. There
is no reason why the student
body can’t come out and pack
the gym at each home en
counter.
Moral support is one of the
greatest attributes in a persons
life, and one of the best ways to
lend your moral support toward
the school is with your partici
pation and cooperation at/the
game. Cooperate with the
cheerleaders, the faculty, and
with your fellow students.
Sportsmanship is another thing
to stress as far as players and
spectators are concerned. If a
referee makes a call that you
think unjust, don’t start booing
or ridiculing him. He is human
and warrants a few mistakes,
even if he had to make them
against our team.
See you at the games!

Despite the slow start of the
basketball team, we’re confi
dent, along with Coach Garrison,
that Chowan will end up with an
impressive record this season.
Basketball is a game that
requires a lot of coordination
and skill, not to exclude team
work. You can’t just go out on
the court, select five men, and
say “let’s play”; there is much
more concerned. The long, hard
hours of practice and drill that
goes on every night is some
thing that would make even the
spectators tired.
Chowan has a number of home
