Chowan Tracksters Third at State Meeting RALEIGH — Chowan College 1 wound up on the short end of a triangular track and field meet Thursday at N. C. State College. State freshmen with 62% points took first place in the meet while Needham-Broughton of Raleigh was second with 57% points. Chowan had 38 points for the day. Floyd McCants (10 points), Carlton Debnam (5), and Gary Henman (5) paced Chowan spikesmen for 20 of the Braves 38 points. Debnam was first man across the 440 yard run finish line, McCants pole vaulted 12’ 4” for a first in that division and Henman’s US’ 3V4” discus throw was good enough for first place. Tennis Team Wins Over Wilmington Chowan’s Tennis Braves won victory number three of the sea son 'Thursday afternoon when they downed the Wilmington net- ters 6-3 on the Seahawks’ home courts. The Braves captured five of the six singles matches and one of the three doubles contests for their margin of victory. Singles Farris (W) defeated Little (C) 6-0, 6-1. Roberson (C) defeated Holden (W) 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Roof (C) defeated Monroe (W) 6-1, 8-6. Moy (C) defeated Craig (W) 6-0, 6-1. 'Tippett (C) defeated Wallace (W) 14-12, 6-2. Joyner (C) defeated Lipsius (W) 6-4, 7-5. Doubles Farris and Holden (W) de feated Roberson and Little (C) 6-4, 6-3. Monroe and Craig (W) de feated Roof and Moy (C) 4-6, 6-0. Tippett and Joyner (C) de feated Wallace and Lipsius (W) 6-4, 6-1. Roberson Wins In All Singles Although they may not have a Pancho Gonzales or a Lew Hoad, the Chowan tennis teams have been very impressive in the matches they have played this year. As of this writing they have completed six of their matches, winning three. In the first game with Louisburg, Cho wan was the victor by a margin of 5-4, and they whipped Wil mington 6-3. The three losses, those to the teams from Camp bell, Louisburg, and Wilmington, were by a margin of only one point. Winning singles matches are becoming a habit to Elton Rober son. He has a perfect record of five wins and no losses. Jimmy Moy is close behind with four wins and only one loss in singles competition. Bobby Little has a 2-3 record. Rounding out the sin gles team are Lanny Roof, Ed Tippett, Lawson Worrell, and David Joyner. In the doubles matches, Rob erson and Little have won four out of their five matches. Moy and Roof have a 3-2 record and the doubles combination of Tip pett and Joyner a 2-3 record. Golf Team at Chowan Adds New Interest Golf has made its debut on the Chowan campus this spring. The members of the team have been practicing on the front campus and someday maybe another Ben Hogan or a Sam Snead will makes way to the big time, and he can look back to the time he practiced and played for ole’ Chowan. This year’s team has gotten off to a bad start, losing their first two matches to a strong Wilmington team. The outcome of these matches were by 1% points and 3 points. The team looked impressive in their win against Cambell College. The linksters for Chowan this year are Joe Bland, Jim Taylor, Richard Collier, and John Hem ingway. BASEBALL SQUAD — Win or lose, these boys of Chowan's Base ball team deserve a lot of credit for their fine games of the sea son. With five conference wins already, the team is pushing for that all important conference title.
