\ THE CHOWANIAN, OCTOBER 1959 Thousands At State Fair Visited Graphic Arts Booth baptist junior college SCHOOL / PRINTiN i Mpmju . rnmm f4UH m BAPTIST JUNIOR Cl flfUgre-cfsfOKO SCHOOL ^ PRI The Roy Parker School of Printing at Chowan College, in cooperation with the North Caro lina Press Association, School of Journalism of the University of North Carolina, and the News and Observer, demonstrated modern printing and newspaper production methods at the North Carolina State Fair during the week of October 12. Thousands of visitors to the fair saw demonstrations of Tele typesetter perforators, Associat ed Press direct wire news print ers, offset lithography, the way a newspaper page is made up and prepared for the presses, and they saw many pictures and original drawings that al most covered a 40-foot back wall. Those who stopped at the booth were given literature about Chowan College as weU as spe cific material concerning the school of printing. The booth was manned during the fair by John McSweeney, William B. Sowell, faculty mem bers, and the following Graphic Arts students: Raymond James of Raleigh; Wayne Alford, Zeb- ulon; Nelson Richards, Roles- ville; Harold Jones, Louisburg; and Keith Abbott, HLocky Mount. Mr. McSweeney and Raymond James appeared on WUNC-TV during a program concerning National Newspaper Week. Others on the same program were John Harden, Greensboro publicist; Sam Ragan, executive editor of the News and Observ er; Don Chipman, Winston- Salem Journal, president of the North Carolina Press Associa tion; and Ken Byerly, U. N. C. School of Journalism. Acknowledgement is made to the News and Observer, Gray and Creech, the Associated Press, and International Busi ness Machine, for loan of mate rials and equipment. Special ap preciation is extended to Frank Daniels, Jr., of the News and Observer-Raleigh Times, for his assistance in preparing the booth.
