THE CHOWANIAN, OCTOBER 1959 Two Oufsfanding Publications The two major publications at Chowan are The Chowanian, monthly newspaper, and the Chowanoka, the college annual. Both of these have student staffs with faculty advisors. The Chowanian is completely produced in the plant of the School of Graphic Arts. The Chowanoka’s pictures, with the exception of the in dividual photographs, are also processed in the printing depart ment, as is the design, layout and printing. The covers are manufactured and embossed by the Kingsport Press, Kings port, Tenn. On these two pages are most of the students who are on the staffs of the two publications. The Chowanian New members have been add ed to THE CHOWANIAN staff for the first 1959-60 semester. The editors and associate ed itors, who were elected at the end of the first semester of last year, will be relieved of their duties at the end of this semes ter, and then a new group, made up of freshmen, will take over. Geneva Congleton of Washing ton, Wayne Alford, Zebulon, and Raymond James, Raleigh, are the editors-in-chief. Last year THE CHOWANIAN was recongnized as the “most attractive school publication in the state” by several newspaper editors. The staff would like to keep this recognition, and to do so it will take the support of the students and faculty at Chowan. Freshmen and sophomores are urged to come to the meet ings of THE CHOWANIAN staff on Tuesday nights at 7:00 in the Graphic Arts building. The staff of THE CHOWAN IAN has an office in the School of Graphic Arts building which is equipped with new type writers, desks for its editors, and in which the two Associated Press news printers are located. The staff would be happy (and surprised) if faculty members would visit the office and learn at first hand what is being done to produce a fine publication. ■IK-y . SHUTTER BUGS — Thomas W. Thomas, Norfolk, Va., demon strates a photo-enlarger to William Patterson, Scotland Neck. These two are doing excellent work as Chowanian photographers. IN CHARGE OF FEATURES — Feature editors Delores Hill, Wood land, and Audrey Marriner, Hickory, Va., check over an edition of last year's CHOWANIAN. Looking on is newly elected associ ate editor, William "Blue" Sharber of Elizabeth City. GET THE CHOWANIAN TO YOU — Circulation managers David Bedsole of Fayetteville, and Marvin Cooper, Columbia, keep a large mailing list in order. Theirs is a tough job.
