New Head
Of Sciences
Appointed
Professor Lionel L. Bishop,
Jr., has been elected chairman
of the Department of Science
for the 1960-61 term, succeed
ing Professor F. Milam John
son, resigned.
PROFESSOR BISHOP
Professor Johnscfn, who also
came to Chowan in 1956, has ac
cepted an appointment with
East Carolina College.
Professor Bishop, who also
came to Chowan in 1956, is a
native of Bethel, graduated from
Swan Quarter high school in
1949, and from East Carolina
College in 1955 with a math ma
jor and science minor. He re
ceived his M. A. degree from the
same college in 1958.
In 1959, Professor Bishop was
awarded a National Science
Fellowship and studied during
that summer at Florida State
University. He will attend Clem-
son College this summer under
a second Fellowship award. He
is now taking week-end classes
at East Carolina towards his
doctorate.
Professor Bishop serves on
several faculty committees at
the college, and takes part in
many of the student extracur
ricular affairs.
He was married in 1955 to the
former Miss Ann Carawan of
Swan Quarter. They have two
children, Leannette and Garrett.
While THE CHOWANIAN wel
comes Professor Bishop to his
new post, it also regrets that
the college will be losing the
services of Professor Johnson.
He has been outstanding in his
work as a teacher and chairman
of the Department of Science,
as well as in the many other
activities he participated in at
Chowan College.
DEDICATION
The 1960 edition of the Cho
wan College yearbook, THE
CHOW ANOKA, just off the
press, is dedicated to Professor
John McSweeney, chairman Of
the School of Graphic Arts at
Chowan.

torial publication was prepared
and printed at the college. The
dedication page pays high trib
ute to Professor McSweeney,
not only for his efforts in behalf
of the yearbook, but for his tire
less and sympathetic assistance
to the Chowan students in all
of their publications activities.

Seme 60 members of the
Eastern North Carolina Press
Association held a luncheon
meeting Saturday, April 30, at
Chowan College and visited the
School of Graphic Arts.
Better known as the Roy
Parker School of Printing, the
school was organized back in
1952 through the efforts of a
few eastern North Carolina pub
lishers. Since that time they
have contributed funds for the
present building which houses
some $150,000 worth of printing
equipment these same publish
ers have donated to Chowan
College.
Don Hall, publisher of the
Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald
and president of the Association,
presided at the Lurcheon meet
ing. Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker,
president of Chowan College, ad
dressed the group, as well as in
troduced Murfreesboro Mayor
Richard Vann; Chamber of
Commerce President Henry
Burgwyn; and George G’bhs,
chairman of the Executive Com
mittee of Chowan College.
The visiting newspaper pub
lishers, following a tour of Cho
wan’s campus and a visit to in
spect the school of printing,
were given a fried chicken
lunch in the new air-conditioned
cafeteria. The school of print
ing students , were in . classes
during'tHe day in ordfer for their
benefactors to se,e the plant in
full operation.
