Cooke, social chairman, Hockessin, Del. \ Freshmen Officers Sophomores Elect CHOWAN ARTIST-Rubie "Rooster" Levels, Jr., of Clinton, who is majoring in business administra tion, Is shown putting the finishing touches on the "Brave Head" which he painted on the new gym' floor at Chowan College. The new hardwood floor has improved the gym for basketball. It was a major project during the summer. "Rooster" has done other art work here, and has many calls for his talent elsewhere. The freshmen recently elected the following officers: Roy Mitchell, president; Bill Strick land, vice-president, Freda Britt, secretary; Duch Blackwelder and Buzzy Cooke, social co-chairmen. Calvin Roy Mitchell, Jr., is from Hampton, Va., where he attended Newport News High. There he was a committee chair man and a member of the Stu dent Council. He also attended the National Conference of Chris tians and Jews. Roy is a pre- ministerial student and plans to continue his education at Wake Forest. William Strickland, Jr., is from Clinton. He attended Clinton High School and was on the foot ball team three years. He was also a member of the band, track and basketball team, president of the Key Club his senior year, and vice-president of the fresh man, sophomore, and junior classes. Bill is studying business administration and plans t o transfer to East Carolina after he finishes here. Mr. and Mrs. William Strickland, Sr., are look ing forward to Bill's graduation so he will be able to work with his father, who is manager of Trucking Industrial. Freda M. Britt, a local girl, graduated from Murfreesboro High School where she took an active part in school activities. She was head cheerleader and a member of Future Homemakers of America; president of the State Y. W. A. and a state re porter. Freda is taking a pre education course and plans to continue her education at Mars Hill. William F. Cooke, Jr., lives in Wilmington, Del., with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. William F. Cooke, Sr. He attended John Dickinson High and was a mem ber of the football and basketball teams. He was president of the sophomore, junior and senior classes. Buzzy was also active in the band, Hi-Y and Letter Club. He plans to enter the field of education and get his B. A. at the University of Delaware. Charlie Francis Blackwelder lives with her parents at Hills boro, and is a graduate of Hills boro High School. She was a member of the newspaper staff, basketball team and Future Teachers of America. Charlie is taking business administration here at Chowan. Phi Theta Kappa By SUE RUFFIN The newly elected officers of the Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity include: President, Aubrey Woodard; Vice-President, Allen Casey; Secretary and Reporter, Sue Ruffin; Treasurer, Barry Bowers; Council Member, Bob Sutherland. Phi Theta Kappa is an hon orary scholastic society whose ob ject is to promote scholarship, to develop character, and to cul tivate fellowship among the stu dents of both sexes in the junior colleges of the United States. The Chowan chapter is known as the Iota Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and was organized in 1957. Eligibility for membership in cludes the following steps: (1) A load of at least 15 semester hours, 12 of which must be in the academic college. (2) Good moral character and qualities of citizenship. (3) Must be in upper scholastic 10 per cent of student body (4) Average 2.0 or better. (5) Completion of one full se mester’s work. October was “Election Month” on the campus. After days of cam paigning by the nominees, the students went to the polls and elected the following class of ficers to lead them during the coming year: Heading the sophomores are Dan Elks, president; Bucky Wise, vice-president; Maryann Wilt shire, secretary-treasurer; Sylvia George, and Bill Vest, social co- chairmen. Dan Elks is from Norfolk, Vir ginia. In high school he was .•) member of the Hi-Y, Monogram Club and played tennis. At Cho wan he is vice-president of the “New Men’s Dormitory.” Bucky Wise, from Murfrees boro, played football and basket ball. He was a member of the student council, played in the band and was sports editor of the annual. At Chowan he has participated in the Dramatics Club and runs track. Maryann Wiltshire, from Rich mond, Virginia, was a member of the Spanish Club, Y-Teens, and S. C. A. Council. At Chowan she is a cheerleader, on the annual staff, and was recently chosen “Sweetheart” of the “New Men's Dorm.” Sylvia George, Norfolk, Vir ginia, was president of the Nor folk Y. W. A., secretary of the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y. She was a mem ber of the Pen Club, Bible Club and sang in the choir. At Chowan she is social chairman of the B. S. U., program chairman of the Y. W. A., president of the “Col umns Dorm” and serves on the Women’s Judiciary. Bill Vest, Lynchburg, Virginia was secretary-treasurer of his senior class and played football. At Chowan he is social chairman of the “New Men’s Dorm.” MRS. ELIZABETH HAMILTON New English Comp. Teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Hamilton of Anderson, S. C., has been ap pointed to the faculty of Chowan College as professor of English composition and dramatics. She will replace Mrs. Betty Batche lor who is resigning at the end of this semester. Mrs. Hamilton received her A.B. degree from W.C.U.N.C., and the M.A. at Chapel Hill. She was a WAC from 1944 to 1946, and was head of the press section, public relations office. Fort Cus ter, Mich.
