Thanksgiving Observed With
International Flavor Here
Chowan students were home for
the holidays. But Thursday, Nov
ember 28 saw Thanksgiving with
an international flavor observed in
the college cafeteria. At 12:35 p.m.
two chartered busses drove onto
the campus, bearing some 85 stu
dents, bound for the annual inter
national Student Retreat in Wil
liamsburg, Virginia.
Awaiting the students’ arrival
wei e several members of the WMS
of Meherrin Baptist Church and
the WMS of Murfreesboro Baptist
Church, who had prepared a meal
of chicken, sandwiches, fruit, po
tato chips, and a soft drink for
their anticipated guests. Tables
were decorated with Tniniature
dolls, representing the early New
England Pilgrims, who celebrated
that first Thanksgiving Day. Be
side each plate was a "favor,"
made by members of the Sunbeam
Bands from the churches and con
taining a scriptural word of
thanksgiving and a piece of chew
ing gum.
After a word of welcome and
greeting by Chaplain Taylor and
the invoking of God’s blessing by
the Reverend John Davis, the stu
dents settled down to eating and
becoming better acquainted. Get
ting acquainted presented some
problems, for not all the students
had been in the United States
long enough to communicate well
in the English language.
In addition to the United States,
the following nations were repre
sented: Chili, Thailand, India, Net
herlands West Indies, South Viet
nam, Philippines, Hong Kong, Lib
eria, Taiwan, Korea, Uganda, Ven
ezuela, Japan, Sierra Leone, Bra
zil, Egypt, Kenya, Syria, Trinidad,
Greece, Pakistan, Cuba, Jordan,
United Arab Republic, Iran, Ecua
dor, and Columbia.

Following his graduation from Chowan, where he is
taking a pre-science curriculum, Andy hopes to continue
his education at either Atlantic Christian College or at
the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. He plans to
major in chemistry and minor in math.
Congratulations to one of the nicest young men on the
