Chowan Alumni Appreciate Their Alma Mater
By MISS FRANCES E. WHITE
It is the desire of every teacher
of the Bible not only to impart
knowledge but to provide an im
petus whereby the student will in
future years put in practice the
learning attained in the classroom.
With these purposes in mind the
Religion Department of Chowan
College devised a plan whereby
the former graduates could write
informally of their evaluation and
application of the knowledge and
influences which they experienced
while at Chowan.
I, as coordinator between the
Department of Religion and the
Alumni, regret that all graduates
could not be contacted, but feel
that the following are a represen
tative group of the students of
past years. Quite a few sent no
reply as probably some had mov
ed to regions unknown as evident
by letters returned, and others
were too burdened with the tasks
at hand to communicate their
thoughts. We are most grateful,
however, for the "touch” of friend
ship from these who have
warmed our hearts through their
frank evaluation and sincere mes
sages of appreciation. May each
reader of the present issue of
THE CHOWANIAN enjoy these as
much as I have as they have ar
rived at varying intervals. Each
letter reminded me of the joys
of "keeping in touch" with those
with whom we were privileged to
instruct and guide.
t
PAUL HASKINS
Paul Haskins, University
of North Carolina at Raleigh. At
Chowan I found my interest in
religion as I followed the instruc
tion of my professor to "read and
study”. I am now married and
building my home and the ideas
and passages from the Scriptures
have formed a concept within me
which will also be built into my
home, which I am sure will lead
to a sounder and firmer family
Ufe.
CHARLES PAUL
Chari** Paul, Professor, Chowan
College
I remember most clearly about
my student days at Chowan Col
lege that the facts of Christian
religion were not only taught to
the beginner but the Christian re
ligion itself was exemplified. Eve-
ly student was considered as of
ultimate worth, an academic jus
tice was tempered with Christian
love and understanding. The cour
ses were designed for the begin
ner student with the intention of
acquainting him with the basic
material found in the Bible. For
me this was a very valuable ap
proach because it provided a
thorough knowledge which is as
sumed in Seminary work. The in
struction prepared me well for a
broader and deeper study of reli
gion.

Lllsa Kaski-Luopa, Finland (Ro
tary Exchange Student, 1961-1962).
I had direct use again last
year of my Religion course that
I took at Chowan when here at
the University we examined the
language of the King James Ver
sion. It was somewhat easier for
me to learn the special character
istics of the vocabulary and syn
tax since I was familiar with the
language beforehand. Whenever I
come in contact with religious ter
minology in translation text or
literature I feel thankful for my
thorough Bible courses at Chowan.
BILLIE HARRIS
Billie Harris, Math Teacher,
Elizabeth City, N. C. "My college
courses helped me to understand
many things I had never known
and new truths that could apply
to my own daily life. My profes
sors were always willing to lis
ten and advise when I asked for
help. As I planned programs for
vespers I feel I grew spiritually.”
MAE BELLE CHAPPELL
Mac Belle Chappell, Music
Teacher, Belvidere, N. C. "The
memories of many happy and
valuable hours I spent as a stu
dent at Chowan are cherished. I
feel that my courses have been
a blessing to me and I will always
cherish the fine fellowship
I shared with my fellow students
and teachers.”
DIANE DIXON
Mur-
Diane Dixon, Secretary,
freesboro Baptist Church.
In every walk and phase of
life — in the church, in our busi
nesses, in our homes and in re
lationship with our friends — we
all need a general knowledge of
the Bible. No one enjoys reading
what he does not understand. A
Igl of questions and doubts can
be clarified through study, espec
ially if one has the privilege of
disagreeing and is encouraged to
do just that.
SYLVIA GEORGE
Sylvia George, Secretary, Cho
wan College.
I thoroughly enjoyed Chowan
College and its religious activities
and courses. If I had it to do
over again I would study much
harder and take advantage of
the opportunity afforded me while
a student. The religious activities
on the campus were as much a
part of my curriculum as was any
othei- student activity. Some of
the most enjoyable activities were
socials sponsored by the B. S. U.,
such as the "Powder Puff Foot
ball Game.”
RANDY BRITTON
Randy Britton — Ahoskie —
"Since leaving Chowan I am con
stantly recalling some of the les
sons learned there. As past Sun
day School teacher for the young
peoples' class and assistant su
perintendent of the Menola Church
I have used much of the literature
that I received at Chowan. It has
been of invaluable aid to me in
teaching and giving me back
ground material.”
CALVIN REYNOLDS
AUDREY MARINER
Audrey Mariner, Greenville,
S. C. "The prime purpose of a
Christian institution, such as Cho
wan College, should be to prepare
young people to earn a living and
also teach them how to live. Chris
tian education in the classroom
and Christ-centered activities can
best accomplish this goal.”

BILL SOWELL
BIN Sowell, Instructor, School
of Graphic Arts, Chowan Col
lege.
Chowan College and the School
of Graphic Arts mean many
things to me. Through training
I have been able to secure a voca
tion and a wife (who was a stu
dent in the School of Printing).
My whole viewpoint Of life and
religion has changed because of
the influence and guidance of my
teachers. As a small boy I at
tended church and Sunday School
so the Bible was not a new book
to me. However, my courses in
Religion gave it new meaning and
understanding.
BETSY BOONE
Betsy Boone, Meredith College-
"Before I studied Old and New
Testament at Chowan I had ac
cepted religious faith without
thoroughly understanding why I
had done so. As I studied I learned
a deeper meaning of religious
faith and appreciated the fact that
the student was uirged to make
up his or her own mind.”
Op-
Working in the newspaper busi
ness as a linotype operator I find
that a knowlege of places,
names, and Biblical subjects gain
ed from my studies at Chowan
have t>een useful to me, especial
ly in setting type for church pages
and other religious items.
SARA FUTRELL
Sara Fufrell, Staff, First Baptist
Church, Ahoskie.
To have been a student at Cho
wan was a very happy and re
warding experience. As a mem
ber of the staff of the First Baptist
Church, Ahoskie, hardly a day
passes that I cannot reflect and
draw on my knowledge which I
received there. Truths gathered
have a far reaching effect on my
life now and in the future be
cause concepts give true purpose
and direction.

Carl Wimbish — South Boston,

ordinator of Distributive Educa
tion of Halifax County, Virginia.
I am grateful that I went to a
denominational school first where
I received a knowledge of the
Bible and was active in the re
ligious activities of the Baptist
Student Union. I am now serving
in the capacity of assistant su
perintendent of Teacher Training
in the Sunday School.”

Mrs. Henry L. Miller (Joyce
Ann Parker) Murfreesboro. "At
Chowan I enjoyed the vesper ser
vices. chapel, and the weeks of
Christian emphasis. I remember
the training that I received in
the Music Department and the
Religion Department there. I am
church organist, help lead the
choir, and teach in the Nursery
Department at Meherrin Baptist
Church.”
